Chapter 48 Under Scrutiny

Author's Preface

[Annie]

The fluorescent lights of the eighth-floor interrogation room buzz with a low, oppressive hum.

A small digital voice recorder sits on the polished table between me and the HR Director, its red recording light blinking like a steady warning.

"For the record, this is a formal statement regarding the incident on September second," the HR Director says, staring across at me. "Ms. Hayes, to clarify for the committee... what exactly was the nature of your past relationship with Oliver?"

My hands clench tightly in my lap, hidden beneath the table. "We dated briefly. It lasted about two weeks before it ended."

"And did Mr. Sterlings know about this history prior to the altercation?" HR presses, leaning forward. "Oliver claims Mr. Kai acted out of personal jealousy—that his intervention was not corporate security, but a personal confrontation over a romantic rival. Was Mr. Kai acting as your manager, or as a jealous partner?"

 It's a trap.

Two days later, although the security footage has cleared me of any fault in the physical altercation itself, the inquiry is still ongoing under company protocol.

Oliver knew what he was doing.

By alleging an improper relationship with Kai, he has forced HR to open a separate review.

The physical threat is gone, but now my professional integrity is being dismantled piece by piece.

"Mr. Sterlings acted as an executive protecting an employee from physical harassment," I say, keeping my voice steady and deliberate. "My brief history with Oliver is completely irrelevant to the fact that he grabbed me without my consent on company grounds."

For forty-five agonizing minutes, I walk a knife's edge—protecting my hard-earned standing, defending Kai, and refusing to give HR any ammunition for its conflict-of-interest investigation.

When I finally walk out into the quiet side corridor, my hands are shaking.

Kai is waiting in the shadows near the secondary stairwell.

The moment he sees my face, his composure cracks, his eyes darkening with concern.

"You shouldn't have had to go through that," he says softly, his voice raw, visibly affected by the stress being forced onto me because of him.

"I survived," I whisper, though the tremor in my breath betrays me. "I just need to get through tonight."

By eight that evening, the weight of the day is scattered across the living room rug in my apartment.

Folder tabs, printed email threads, and compliance questionnaires form a chaotic perimeter around us.

Kai sits cross-legged on the carpet, his dark suit jacket tossed over the sofa, his tie loosened, and his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

He cross-references corporate policy documents and HR guidelines while I write my formal statement, offering quiet clarifications whenever I ask.

I sit beside him on the plush carpet, hugging my knees tightly to my chest.

As he explains policy clauses, breaks down the review process, and points out legal protections, I remain silent.

I just listen, watching the steady movements of his hands and the calm, unwavering expression on his face.

As the quiet fills the room, a cold knot of doubt begins to tighten in my stomach.

I look at the legal papers spread out between us.

My career at SilverOak was hard-earned.

I fought for every inch of respect in that building, and now my reputation is under scrutiny because my personal life has bled into the office.

Is this reasonable?

Is bringing Kai into my world, letting the boundaries blur between us, actually a mistake?

Am I risking everything I built just to reach for something I'm not even sure I can hold onto?

"Annie?"

Kai’s voice breaks through the noise in my head.

He sets the policy manual down on the carpet and turns toward me, recognising the panic on my face before I can put it into words.

He doesn't make a move to touch me right away.

He simply rests his wrists over his knees, his expression completely open, devoid of any pressure or expectation.

"If this is too much," he says softly, his voice low and steady, "we can stop."

I blink, looking up at him. "What?"

"If the noise at work, the HR scrutiny, or any of this is making you doubt your place at SilverOak, we can step back," Kai says gently. "We can put everything back exactly the way it was before. I will deal with legal, I will take full responsibility for the conflict-of-interest claim, and you can focus entirely on your career. Your peace of mind comes first, Annie. Always."

The room falls completely still.

I stare at him, my heart aching as his words wash over me.

The contrast hits me with blinding clarity.

Oliver had always sounded as though he were saying, Don't leave me.

Kai sounds like something entirely different: If you need me to leave, I will.

And somehow, that makes me want to stay.

The knot in my chest untangles, replaced by a sudden, overwhelming wave of warmth.

I don't rush.

I slowly reach out across the carpet and take his hand.

Kai stills, his eyes searching mine with a sudden, quiet intensity as my fingers wrap firmly around his.

I move closer, shifting across the rug until the distance between us vanishes entirely.

I climb into his lap, straddling his thighs, and wrap my arms around his neck.

Looking into his eyes, I lean in and press my lips against his.

The kiss isn't tentative or careful.

It is rich with raw passion, a deliberate, conscious choice to step into his world completely.

He lets out a soft, shuddering sigh against my mouth.

His arms tighten around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest as he kisses me back with a fierce, tender hunger that makes my head spin.

His hands move up my back, his fingers tangling in my hair as he holds me close, as if making up for every second he has spent holding himself back.

When we finally break apart, both of us are breathless, our foreheads resting together in the quiet room.

I lean back just enough to look into his dark, searching eyes, a small, breathless smile tugging at the corner of my lips.

"You're not getting rid of me that easily," I murmur, my thumb gently tracing his cheekbone. "Just so you know... I am naturally very clingy. Once I decide someone is mine, I don't leave."

A slow, breathtaking smile spreads across Kai's face, transforming his usually guarded features into pure warmth.

A quiet, deep laugh rumbles in his chest.

"Is that a warning?" he asks softly, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

"Consider it a fact," I reply, tightening my grip around his neck.

He leans up, pressing a lingering, sweet kiss to the tip of my nose before resting his chin on my shoulder, his arms wrapped securely around my waist.

"Good," he whispers against my skin, his tone light and full of affectionate mischief.

"Because you're dealing with someone who is infinitely clingier and entirely single-minded. You're stuck with me, Annie."

I laugh softly, burying my face in the crook of his neck, the heavy stack of HR paperwork on the floor completely forgotten.

The next morning, the domestic warmth of my living room feels like a distant dream the moment I step onto the executive floor of SilverOak.

Knowing what we share—knowing the feel of his mouth, the warmth of his hands, and the promises made on my apartment rug—makes acting as strictly professional colleagues nearly impossible.

Yet, with HR watching our every step, we have to be flawless.

The boardroom on the top floor feels like a pressure cooker.

An influential board member, AJ Thomas, sits at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by senior partners.

He hasn't just come for the Project Zero pitch; his sharp, evaluating eyes follow every move Kai and I make, scrutinising our professional dynamic amid the conflict-of-interest review.

When the presentation begins, the atmosphere is suffocating.

A key partner raises a sharp, aggressive objection regarding our financial projections, and for a split second, the pitch teeters on the edge of failure.

Then Kai steps up.

Without missing a beat, I slide the updated risk analysis across the table to him.

Our coordination is seamless, honed by weeks of working side-by-side.

Our professional chemistry is undeniable—electric, sharp, and completely aligned.

Kai catches my lead, dismantling the partner's objection with ruthless precision while I back his strategy with live data.

By the time we conclude, even Thomas nods in silent approval.

As the room clears, I linger behind to gather my presentation folders.

Through the slightly cracked glass door of the adjacent executive office, I catch the low, measured voices of AJ Thomas and the Senior Legal Director.

"Keep this contained," Thomas says quietly, his tone clipped. "I don't want it reaching the wider office."

"Kai has already made his position clear," the Legal Director replies, his voice calm and completely steady.

"I know," Thomas sighs, rubbing his temples. "Just ensure HR doesn't push the conflict-of-interest angle any further than necessary."

My fingers freeze over my briefcase.

His position? Why was Thomas so concerned about Kai?

Before I can ponder what any of it means, the door swings open.

Kai steps out into the hallway, his dark eyes catching mine instantly, his expression shifting into that quiet, reassuring warmth reserved only for me.

I smile back, slipping my folders into my bag, but as we walk side-by-side toward the elevators under the watchful eyes of the staff, the unanswered questions linger in the air between us.
