Author's Preface
[Cont.]
[Annie]
The heat between us is suffocating, completely stripping away the cool, quiet air of my apartment.
My fingers tangle in the soft fabric of his open collar, popping the top buttons of his shirt as his mouth moves feverishly down my jaw.
A sharp gasp catches in my throat as he leans in, his tongue tracing a burning path along my skin before his lips lightly suck at the sensitive spot where my neck meets my shoulder.
His mouth glides over the curve of my collarbone with an intense, uninhibited hunger, while his hands move down my sides, pulling my body flush against his chest.
Every touch sends a fierce, aching tremor straight down my spine.
I tug at his dress shirt, wanting his skin against mine, wanting to erase every inch of space left between us.
My fingers reach the middle buttons—
Suddenly, Kai’s hands enclose my wrists.
He doesn't snatch them away; his grip is firm, trembling slightly, gentle yet absolute.
He pulls back just enough for his breathing to shudder against my lips, his chest heaving as if he’s just run a marathon.
His dark eyes are wild and heavy with a restraint that looks almost painful.
Before I can speak, he brings my trapped hands up to his face.
He presses his mouth to the center of my left palm, then my right, kissing them with a reverent, lingering devotion that makes my pulse spike.
"Annie," he rasps, his voice thick and rough against my skin. "I’ve wanted you for so long. Desired you for years..." He presses another lingering kiss to my knuckles, his eyes holding mine with an intensity that burns. "I don't want this feeling to end so fast. I want to learn every single inch of your mind, your heart, and your emotions before I learn your body."
A rush of heat floods my cheeks.
My own uncontrolled desire leaves me flustered, suddenly acutely aware of how recklessly I had unbuttoned his shirt, how tightly my legs were wrapped around his waist.
Seeing the flush on my face, Kai lets out a breathless, quiet laugh.
He reaches up, his large, warm hand tenderly cupping my face, his thumb stroking over my cheekbone.
"Don't," he whispers softly, leaning in to press a tender, melting kiss against my lips.
"You have no idea how many times I’ve imagined you like this. On this counter. In my arms." He rests his forehead against mine, his eyes searching every detail of my face. "Controlling myself right now is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life."
It’s as he says those words, his forehead resting against mine, that I shift slightly on the granite counter—and feel the rigid, unyielding hardness of his body pressed firmly against my thigh.
A sudden breath catches in my chest.
Pressed so close, the undeniable physical proof of his raw desire leaves no room for doubt.
He isn't rejecting me.
He isn't pulling back because he doesn't want me.
He is genuinely fighting himself with every ounce of willpower he possesses, holding back only because he cherishes me too much to rush.
He helps me down from the counter, his hands lingering on my waist until my feet touch the floor.
He slowly buttons his shirt back up, his hands growing steadier as he smooths down his collar.
When we reach the front door, he stops.
The air between us remains charged, thick with an unspoken promise.
Kai reaches out, cupping the back of my neck to pull me into one last, deep, intoxicating kiss that leaves my knees weak.
Then, pulling back, he leans down and presses a long, quiet kiss directly to my forehead.
"Goodnight, Annie," he whispers against my skin.
He steps back out into the dimly lit hallway, the door clicking softly shut behind him.
I stand alone in the quiet entryway, my heart hammering against my ribs, breathless and entirely undone.

The next morning at SilverOak, the professional world demands its pound of flesh, but the atmosphere between us has irreversibly shifted.
We arrive separately to preserve decorum, but every interaction carries an electric undercurrent.
During the ten o'clock status meeting for Project Orange, Kai sits at the head of the conference table in his sharp dark suit, delegating tasks with precise clarity.
But when he hands me the updated financial brief, his fingers linger against mine for a split second longer than necessary.
His eyes catch mine across the table, holding a quiet, private warmth that sends a thrill straight through me.

By three in the afternoon, however, the peaceful bubble shatters.
My phone rings. It’s HR.
"Ms. Hayes, please come up to the eighth floor executive conference room," the HR Director's voice is stiff, formal, and tight. "We need to discuss an incident reported from yesterday evening."
My stomach drops. Oliver.
When I walk into the eighth-floor conference room, the air is thick with legal tension.
The Regional HR Director sits at the end of the long glass table, flanked by two corporate legal representatives.
Oliver hasn't shown his face, but a formal complaint lies printed on the desk in front of them—alleging an unprovoked physical assault by a SilverOak executive and hinting at inappropriate workplace favoritism.
"Ms. Hayes, take a seat," the HR Director says smoothly. "A formal complaint was lodged this morning regarding an altercation near the lower executive exit involving an external visitor, Oliver, and Mr. Kai. He claims Mr. Kai attacked him without provocation over a personal grievance—and suggests a conflict of interest in your department."
A cold weight settles in my chest.
Oliver knew exactly where to aim.
He doesn't have to win a lawsuit; he just has to plant enough doubt about our professional integrity to trigger an internal investigation.
If HR decides Kai stepped out of line over a personal rivalry, both our positions are on the line.
Before I can answer, the door behind me swings open.
Kai walks in, setting a slim, black USB drive on the glass table with a soft clink.
"That is the unedited security footage from the side corridor at seven-thirty-five PM yesterday," he says, resting his hands lightly on the back of a chair. "Following standard incident protocol for departmental heads, I requested an immediate export from Corporate Security this morning after receiving notice of the formal query."
He pauses, his tone impeccably calm and matter-of-fact. "It shows Oliver physically blocking Ms. Hayes, ignoring her explicit refusals, and grabbing her face. Legal will need to review it to determine the appropriate corporate response."
The HR Director hesitates, looking over at the Senior Legal Director seated beside him.
"Regardless of the footage, Mr. Sterlings, an executive striking an outside visitor on company grounds creates a severe liability. HR is required to document this formally, and we may have to suspend you pending a full board review if there is merit to his conflict-of-interest claim."
The Senior Legal Director plugs the drive into his laptop.
For two long minutes, the room falls dead silent as the screen flashes with the overhead view of the hallway: Oliver pulling me toward him, my hands pushing him away, and Kai stepping in the moment Oliver grabbed my face.
The Legal Director leans back, his expression shifting.
He doesn't look at Kai with the firm authority usually reserved for a manager under investigation.
Instead, he turns to him, his posture straightening in a subtle, almost cautious deference.
"The footage clearly establishes what happened, Kai," the Legal Director says quietly, his tone dropping the formal edge used by HR. "Oliver's claim of unprovoked assault won't stand up to legal scrutiny. We'll handle the documentation and draft the necessary response from our office. You won't need to attend the preliminary review."
The HR Director blinks, clearly caught off guard by how quickly legal stepped in to shield Kai from the board's scrutiny, but he nods slowly without pressing further. "We'll keep Ms. Hayes's statement on file for the formal record, then."
The tension in the room eases slightly, but the complaint isn't dead.
It's an open file now, a paper trail hanging over my career— and a reminder of how easily Oliver can bleed into my professional life.

As we step out of the conference room and walk toward the private elevators, Kai walks beside me, his hands thrust calmly into his trouser pockets.
I've seen people in this building respect him before.
They listen when he speaks in strategy meetings; they value his precision and his analytical instincts.
The Legal Director hadn't just agreed with Kai's evidence—he had deferred to him, taking responsibility for handling the corporate fallout without a second thought.
As the elevator doors slide open, the Legal Director steps aside, holding the door for Kai with a quiet, practiced deference before following us inside.
I look at his reflection in the polished steel doors.
His focus is on me, his eyes softening as he catches my gaze in the mirror, silent and reassuring.
But as the elevator glides smoothly downward, I know that beneath the steady, quiet presence of the man who held me in my kitchen, there is another layer to Kai— one that commands a weight in this building I am only just beginning to understand.
