Prologue

Author's Preface

It was another late night. A good-looking young man with short, messy dark grey hair stood by a battered door. Davis Cloo had just got back home after a long day. he opened the door to his tiny apartment. It was truly tiny, as it only had a single bedroom and a bathroom, nothing else.

His small fridge was right beside his bed, not because he was so lazy, but because he lacked space to put it elsewhere. Atop it was his old, already slightly broken phone.

"I really hope I will have enough, and this greedy landlord won't raise the rent again without informing me."

He muttered as he grabbed his phone and then just lay down on his bed. He waited patiently, holding his phone tightly, waiting for the buzz. In this day and age, he was paid daily, and every transaction happened simultaneously, so after a single buzz, he would know for sure whether the rent stayed the same.

"Life is money, and money is life. If everything goes smoothly, I will be able to put a few credits towards next month's bills."

As soon as he finished talking to himself, he felt that the phone vibrated in his grip, so he quickly looked at it. The bank app was already pre-opened, and he was able to see right away what had happened; however, his previously optimistic self had completely vanished. His balance stood at precisely -2 Credits.

"T-that bastard! He promised me a raise! I only received 80 instead of the promised 88? And the rent was increased again? B-but what about..."

Suddenly his bank app flashed red, and he felt a sharp pain coming from his chest. In a swift motion, he jumped out of bed, but he immediately collapsed onto the ground. His nose, eyes, and ears started bleeding, and before he could even register what had happened, his head had collided with the floor.

"Wake up, I still have more use for you!"

A kind, womanly voice was heard, and almost immediately all the pain and discomfort left, and Davis slowly rose from the floor.

He found himself in a completely different room. It was blindingly white, and although there was no source of light in the closed room, it was just as bright as if he were outside at noon.

On his left side, he saw two red circular plates that seemed like two large buttons, but he saw nothing else. He couldn't even understand where the voice came from because he was alone in the room.

"Yes, you will do just fine. Once you have learned the ropes, let us meet. No, go to sleep!"

Suddenly, a loud snap sound echoed in the empty room.
