The Gala

Author's Preface

Chantell awoke at five in the morning to the sharp sound of her alarm blaring from inside her clutch purse.

"Shit! Shit! Shit!"

Ian stirred beside her, groggily rubbing his eyes as he tried to piece together where he was. "W... what?"

Chantell didn't answer. She threw off the covers and scrambled across the floor, completely bare except for her black lace knickers, desperately hunting down her bag. Snatching her phone out, she checked the time and let out another horrified gasp.

"Shit! Shit! Shit! I'm supposed to be at school by seven! There's a massive delivery of costumes arriving!"

"So...?" Ian murmured, resting on one elbow as his eyes followed her around the room.

Chantell froze mid-step, her hands flying to her waist as she looked down at herself, then at the crumpled emerald silk dress pooling near the bedroom door. Her jaw dropped.

"So, Ian, as you can see, I didn't bring a change of clothes! I can hardly walk into homeroom dressed like a Christmas ornament!"

Ian let out a low chuckle, a lazy grin spreading across his face. "Oh.

"

"It's not funny!" She frantically grabbed her dress off the floor. "You wouldn't be able to drive me home first, would you?"

He swung his legs over the side of the bed, stretching his broad shoulders. "Anytime."

---

She stood on the school's loading bay waiting for the delivery van-which was late, as usual.

Ian had managed to speed her back to her apartment, but due to a massive gridlock caused by a traffic accident on the highway, her window to get ready had shrunk down to a frantic three minutes. She had just enough time to throw on her usual sensible teacher attire: charcoal-gray trousers and a high-necked, long-sleeved blouse.

There hadn't been a single second to strip off the elaborate lingerie from the night before.

So there she stood in the cool morning air, looking every bit the proper drama teacher on the outside, while underneath her crisp linen blouse, the stiff boning of her sheer lace bodice dug relentlessly into her ribs. Every single step she took sent the metal clips of her garter belt slapping uncomfortably against her thighs.

She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.

"Never again," Chantell muttered under her breath, grimacing as the lace lace trim pinched her waist. "Never, ever again."

"Miss L!"

Chantell winced and slowly turned around.

Kieron was walking toward the loading dock, a half-eaten breakfast bagel in hand and his athletic bag slung over his shoulder.

"Morning, Kieron," she said, carefully standing as rigid as possible so the structured corset wouldn't shift under her clothes.

"You look... stiff, Miss," Kieron noted, taking a bite of his bagel. "Back hurting?"

"Something like that," Chantell replied through gritted teeth, offering a tight, forced smile. "Just waiting on the costume truck. Shouldn't you be heading to practice?"

"Coach sent me out to grab some gear from the gym," he explained, squinting toward the empty driveway. "Hey, if those costume boxes are heavy, you want me to help unpack 'em?"

Chantell imagined bending over, lifting heavy cardboard boxes, and trying to maneuver up the stairs while trapped in a tight bodice and suspenders.

"No!" she blurted out, a little too loudly.

Kieron blinked, startled.

"I mean... no, thank you, Kieron," Chantell corrected quickly, clearing her throat. "I'll have the stage crew handle it later. You just focus on... football."

"Alright, Miss," Kieron said slowly, giving her a slightly puzzled look before backing away. "Hope your back feels better." As he walked away, his eyes gave her a quick once-over.

Did he know?

Her smile faltered.

He can see through my clothes, can he?

She glanced down at herself. Charcoal-gray trousers. Sensible blouse. Nothing remotely suspicious.

Get a grip, Chantell.

As soon as he turned the corner, She hurriedly looked down at herself, pressing her hands against her chest and checking the waistband of her trousers. Everything was covered the high neck of her blouse and the thick material of her work pants left nothing visibly exposed.

He was probably just being a typical teenage jock giving a teacher a casual once-over, but the mere thought of a student catching onto her naughty secret made her pulse spike with a dangerous, electric thrill.

She was playing with fire, and she knew it. But standing there with her skin still tingling from the night before, she couldn't entirely deny how exhilarating it felt.

Before her racing thoughts could spiral any further, the deep rumble of a diesel engine echoed down the lane.

The long-awaited costume van finally rounded the corner, its tires crunching against the gravel as it pulled up to the loading bay. Chantell slapped on her most professional, unflappable teacher mask, smoothed down her blouse one last time, and stepped forward to greet the driver.

---

"Michael! Oh, Michael!" Chantell called across the room.

She'd been trying to get the boy's attention for ten minutes.

"Michael!" she screeched, finally snapping him out of whatever daydream he'd been lost in.

"Sorry, Miss."

"It's okay. I just wanted to discuss your thoughts on the rewrites."

"I'm here."

"So, the principal has given us his concerns and suggestions. But we, as a group, said fuck it, didn't we?"

"We did," Belle answered.

"Exactly. So, Michael here has been spamming my work email with constant rewrites. I've read every single one, painstakingly, and I've finally settled on one."

The whole class sat up a little straighter.

Chantell shifted in her chair, still acutely aware of the secret lingerie clinging to her skin beneath her professional clothes. Every so often, she discreetly checked that her blouse hadn't somehow become transparent. It hadn't, obviously. But apparently, her brain had decided that worrying about this was now a full-time occupation.

She cleared her throat, adjusting her posture.

"So, we're going with version..." She glanced down at her notes. "Four... no, sorry. Six point eight."

A few students whispered among themselves, flipping through their binders.

"So, in this version," Chantell continued, "we're staying close to the original, except Todd doesn't slit their throats. Somehow, he knocks them unconscious instead. Then Mrs. Lovett makes the pies. No graphic killings. We imply what happens, but we don't show it."

---

"Okay, people, that's lunch!" Chantell shouted over the bell.

They'd been rehearsing the revised play for three hours, and she was spent. Her body was practically on fire thanks to the elaborate undergarments she'd been foolish enough to wear beneath her sensible teacher's clothes.

As the students filed out of the hall, she finally let herself relax. She unpinned her hair, letting it tumble down her shoulders, took a deep breath, and unbuttoned the top two buttons of her blouse.

"That it, Miss? Stripping down already?"

Ian's playful voice echoed from behind her.

She laughed, turning around to face him. "How long have you been standing there?"

"Long enough to know you're missing an actor."

"Yeah, well, football's more important to some people," she sighed.

She walked over to where he was sitting, her sensible heels clicking against the floor. When she reached him, she deliberately straddled his lap, settling herself comfortably against him. His warmth sent a delicious shiver through her. With a swish of her long red hair, she leaned down and pressed her lips to his in a deep kiss.

"Easy, tiger," Ian purred against her mouth, shifting slightly beneath her. "I only came to collect Jared."

"Really?" She kissed him again, lingering this time. Her hips began to slowly thrust forward, allowing his growing bulge rub agaisnt her vagania. The fabric acting like a barrier, like it was forbidden. A rush of hest surged through her body. She let out a small moan into his ear. "Then why are you in my theatre?" She asked purring, her hands tangled in his hair.

"Because, Miss L, I wanted to invite you to a museum gala this weekend." His voice hitched with his increasing arousal.

"A museum? My, my... you really know how to spoil a girl." She purred grinding harder against him.

"Well, since I've only got six weeks left, I've got to show you the sights." He hiccuped as she built momentum

"I prefer the sights in your bedroom." She reached down with her hand positioning his hardness against her sweet spot.

"So do I, but..." Ian paused, a wicked grin touching his lips. "I have... commitments." He moaned as he kiss her.

"Oh, yeah? Like what?" She moaned into his ear woth feral gasps

"Charity events, businesses to run, and some sexy teacher who, for some reason, won't leave me alone." He felt his orgasm build, like fire in his own chest, pulling her down harder.

"Tell me who this teacher is. I'll sort her out." Chantell leaned closer, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "You're mine."

"That's sweet," Ian grinned. "Well, if I bring you to the museum, she might get the idea and leave me alone."

Both of them groaned as he exploded in his trousers.

"Fine," Chantell said, throwing up an arm as she too exploded . "I'll come to your party." Chantell panted, planting one last lingering kiss on his cheek before jumping to her feet.

---

Ian had to sit for moment allowing himself to recompose himself. He stood his legs wobbling slightly.

"Good. I'll pick-"

Ian cut himself off as he noticed the mischievous, scheming look spreading across her flushed face.

"What?"

"You know... since you're my friend..."

"Yeah...?"

"And you have acting experience...and I'm coming to this party" her grin didn't falter.

"No, Chantell. Absolutely not."

"Come on, it'll be fun to watch you in action" she teased "and you can impress me with your acting skills"

"Wait, do i have a say in this?" Ian stared at her, catching on to her absurd idea, before letting out a dry chuckle.

"Not really"

"Fine, but, you're going to owe me a lot of cocktails for this."

"Well, that's fine," Chantell smirked, dusting off her skirt. "My big strong man is paying anyway."

---

Saturday evening had finally arrived.

Chantell stood waiting for Ian, smoothing a hand over the silky silver dress she'd chosen for the occasion. It was simple, elegant and modest, with none of the daring slits or plunging necklines she'd worn on their last date.

For once, she hadn't spent ages trying to decide how much skin to show.

The silver fabric caught the light whenever she moved, its cool sheen setting off the vivid red of her hair. She'd left it loose around her shoulders, keeping everything else understated.

Her phone buzzed.

Ian: I'll be there in five.

Chantell: OK.

She slipped the phone back into her bag and glanced towards the window.

It had been a hard week. Rehearsals had dragged on, Michael had practically buried her in revised scripts, and Ian had been so distracted with work that she'd struggled to get more than a few minutes of his attention at a time.

She understood. He had businesses to run and a future in London to sort out. She wasn't expecting him to drop everything whenever she snapped her fingers.

Still, she'd missed him.

The admission irritated her slightly.

They were supposed to be having fun. No demands, no expectations, no complicated conversations about what might happen when he left for London.

Somehow, she'd started looking forward to seeing him even when she knew perfectly well they weren't going to end up in bed.

That was becoming a rather inconvenient habit.

A car horn sounded outside.

Chantell picked up her bag, took one last look in the mirror, and headed for the door.

---

The moment the heavy double doors opened, the sheer scale of the museum's central grand hall hit Chantell.

High, arched glass ceilings soared overhead, reflecting the warm amber glow of grand chandeliers. Instead of blaring music, the massive cavern of marble and stone was filled with a loud, rhythmic hum a bustling ocean of high-society chatter, deep laughter, and the steady clinking of crystal stemware echoing off the walls.

The room was a dizzying kaleidoscope of wealth and style. Women drifted past in sweeping silk and velvet gowns of deep emerald, sapphire, crimson, and shimmering gold, while men wore crisp, tailored tuxedos, charcoal suits, and designer velvet jackets.

As they stepped up to the grand reception arch, Ian calmly handed over a heavy, gilded envelope his steep donation fee and ticket entry for the night to a gloved host who checked them off a leather-bound guest list.

Before Chantell could even take in the sight of uniformed waiters gliding through the crowd with silver trays of delicate canapés teardrop spoons of caviar, bite-sized beef carpaccio, and miniature spun-sugar tarts-a barrage of blinding white lights cut through the room.

Flash! Flash! Flash!

Photographers lined the velvet ropes near the entrance, their cameras clicking incessantly as new arrivals walked in. Chantell winced slightly at the sudden glare, but before she could feel out of place, Ian's hand slid smoothly down to encircle her waist. He tucked her flush against his side, his thumb stroking through the silk of her dress, guiding her effortlessly through the press of bodies with absolute confidence.

"Eyes on me," he murmured near her ear, a soft smile tugging at his lips as he guided her right past the flashing lenses and deeper into the safety of the main hall.

"Let's go get those drinks you promised me."

He navigated the buzzing crowd like a man who knew every inch of the place, ushering her directly toward the massive, black-marble bar set up at the center of the hall. The bar was illuminated from beneath, stocked with tiers of crystal decanters, towering pyramids of champagne coupes, and top-shelf liquors.

Ian pulled out a sleek stool for her, resting a hand gently on her shoulder as she sat down.

"One high-end bar, as requested," Ian said softly, leaning down close so she could hear him over the constant roar of aristocratic chatter. "What can I get you?"

"So this... this is your world," Chantell said, taking a slow sip from her glass.

"No, not really. I prefer dingy bars like The Moonshine and the one down near the tracks."

"You're really not what I expected."

"How so?" Ian asked, leaning an elbow against the black marble bar and looking down at her with a lazy, intrigued smile.

"You're gorgeous, you sing, you act, you run businesses... maybe not always a hundred percent successful, but you earn more than enough to keep by. And yet you say you hate the corporate world. You're an enigma, Ian Jenkins." She offered him a small, knowing smile.

"Look, to be honest with you, Chan," Ian said, his voice softening, "I run businesses everywhere. I'm not always successful, nobody is, but I invest my time and money where it actually matters to me. And it's paid off over the years."

Chantell looked down into her glass, tracing the rim with her nail. "You know... you make things so hard."

"Hard... is my middle name," Ian smirked, letting out a low chuckle.

She tried not to laugh, but the wickedness in his eyes made it impossible. Before she could deliver a sharp comeback, the rest of the evening swept them up into a dizzying blur of high-society introductions, handshake after handshake, and forced polite smiles.

"This is Ambassador Kwame Osei," Ian introduced smoothly, gesturing toward a distinguished man dressed impeccably in a rich, tailored Agbada. "He owns RJT Global."

"A pleasure to meet you," Ambassador Osei smiled warmly, offering a regal nod.

"And over here..." Ian guided her by the elbow toward a sharply dressed woman with ice-blue eyes and a commanding posture. "This is Susan Ratchett."

"Of Ratchett & Co.?" Chantell asked, keeping her composure.

"The very one," Ian confirmed.

"Miss Ratchett," Chantell said, her voice carrying a genuine trace of awe.

Susan Ratchett was a legend in business circles, the kind of formidable, icy powerhouse whose name showed up on fortune lists and major news headlines.

Susan glanced down at Chantell's extended hand with a cool, evaluating gaze before offering a firm, precise handshake. Her sharp eyes took in the silver dress, the vibrant red hair, and the poise Chantell was fighting hard to maintain. "It's nice to meet you... and you are?"

"Sorry-Chantell Lovelace," Chantell replied, smoothing out her tone and offering a poised, professional smile.

"Chantell is a brilliant drama educator," Ian piped in smoothly, sliding a hand to the small of Chantell's back, his presence grounding and supportive. "She's single-handedly spearheading the local highschools arts production this season."

Susan raised a single, perfectly sculpted eyebrow, looking between Ian and Chantell with a slight, knowing tilt of her head.

"An artist," Susan remarked, her sharp expression softening just a fraction. "Ian rarely brings company to these events, Miss Lovelace. Especially company with an actual passion for something other than tax write-offs."

Chantell felt a subtle warmth bloom in her chest at Ian's quick defense and compliment, though she kept her cool composure firmly intact.

"Miss Ratchett, can I just say what an absolute pleasure it is to meet you," Chantell said, her voice smooth and confident. "Your restoration work downtown on the old cinema plaza was fantastic. I loved the fact that you kept all the original artwork and architectural detailing. It preserved the soul of the building."

Susan's icy posture melted instantly. A genuine, impressed smile broke across her features as her eyes lit up with unexpected warmth.

"You noticed the plasterwork?" Susan asked, leaning in closer. "Hardly anyone ever mentions the original murals! Everyone is usually too obsessed with the seating capacity or the commercial space."

"How could I not?" Chantell laughed softly, gesturing with her glass. "It's a masterclass in classic design. In fact, we were just discussing stage aesthetics for our upcoming production..."

Within moments, the formidable corporate tycoon and the high school drama teacher were completely locked in conversation. Susan wrapped her arm lightly through Chantell's, laughing at a quick joke Chantell made about stage lighting, and the two of them began drifting casually toward the art gallery section of the hall deep in a spirited debate about classic theater sets, historical restoration, and local arts funding.

Ian stood completely frozen, his jaw practically on the marble floor. He had spent weeks stressing over how to approach the notoriously tough, cold Susan Ratchett to secure her investment for London and Chantell had just charmed the woman off her feet in less than two minutes without even trying.

Standing alone amidst the buzzing crowd, holding his champagne glass, Ian let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh, his eyes tracking the silver dress and the vibrant trail of red hair disappearing into the gallery.

Ian stared after them, slowly turning his champagne glass between his fingers.

"You have got to be kidding me."

He'd spent weeks trying to secure a proper meeting with Susan Ratchett. Weeks preparing proposals, revising figures, and arranging introductions, only to be met with polite smiles and the sort of questions designed to expose every weakness in his business plan.

And Chantell had just wandered off with the woman as though they'd known each other for years.

He took a sip of champagne, shaking his head. "Bloody hell, Chan."

Across the gallery, he caught sight of Chantell pointing toward one of the displays while Susan listened intently. A moment later, both women burst out laughing.

Ian couldn't remember the last time he'd seen Susan Ratchett laugh like that.

He considered going after them, then thought better of it.

For once, he decided to keep his mouth shut and let Chantell do her thing.

Besides, he was rather enjoying the view. The way the silver dress clung to her waist, the vivid cascade of red hair spilling over her shoulders she was completely stealing the room without even trying.

Not that he'd ever admit that to her.

His phone vibrated in his jacket pocket. He reached in, pulled out the glowing screen, and froze as he saw the contact name illuminating the display: Maxine.

"Shit," Ian muttered under his breath, his playful mood instant evaporating into a cold spike of dread.
