Author's Preface
[Cont.]
[Annie]
The rest of the workday slips by in a blur of quiet tension.
Ever since this morning, the space between Kai and me feels charged with everything left unsaid.
The boxing wraps tucked into his entryway closet.
The old, faded scars across his knuckles.
The corporate summit photograph in the gala book that doesn't fit the man I thought I knew.
And, under it all, the phantom memory of that night in the hotel room—my fingers in his hair, his sharp intake of breath when I pulled him down to kiss him.
We both remember it.
I guess we both know the other remembers it.
But neither of us has crossed that boundary again.

By seven-thirty in the evening, the floor is mostly empty.
I pack my laptop into my tote bag, leaving Kai finishing up a final set of reports in his corner office, and head down the main elevators toward the ground floor.
The main lobby of SilverOak is illuminated by warm overhead lights, scattered with lingering executives and security personnel finishing up their shifts.
I make it halfway across the polished marble floor when a familiar voice cuts sharply through the steady hum of the building.
"Annie."
My stomach drops.
Oliver stands near the glass entrance doors, his suit jacket wrinkled, his posture rigid with a desperate, bitter edge.
I stop dead in my tracks. "Oliver. I told you on the phone—"
"So that's what this is?" He interrupts loudly, stepping directly into my path.
His voice echoes off the high marble walls, catching the attention of two senior analysts heading toward the doors and a security guard near the turnstiles.
"You leave me, start sleeping with your boss, and then pretend I'm the problem?"
A cold flare of fury rushes through my veins. "Keep your voice down and get out of here."
"You women always do this," Oliver sneers, his expression twisting as he weaponizes the public setting to humiliate me. "You act like you're looking for a nice guy, then run to the first man with money and a better looks."
"I am not your girlfriend. I never was," I snap, keeping my voice low, razor-sharp, and steady. "And I have not cheated on you. We are done. Just leave."
Oliver’s eyes flick past my shoulder, narrowing suddenly.
I turn slightly and see Kai standing a few yards away near the main elevators, holding his leather portfolio.
He has just stepped off the lift.
He doesn't interrupt; he simply stands there, entirely still, maybe listening to every word.
Oliver lets out a harsh, bitter laugh, looking directly at Kai.
"Ask your boss. Maybe he'll tell you how many other women he's had."
I don't give Oliver the satisfaction of another second.
I turn on my heel and walk rapidly away from the main lobby, heading down the side corridor that leads toward the lower executive parking deck—a quieter, more secluded hallway away from the staring security guards.
Footsteps echo sharply behind me.
"Annie, wait—"
"Don't touch me!" I turn, stepping back, but he catches my wrist in a tight, desperate grip.
"Listen to me!" he spits, pulling me closer.
I yank my arm back, breaking his hold, but before I can step away, Oliver lunges forward, grabbing my face forcibly with both hands, trying to press his mouth against mine.
I shove at his chest, leaning back—
Before I can process the anything, Kai steps between us.
There is no shouting, no dramatic warning.
Just one swift, brutally precise punch that connects directly with Oliver's jaw.
The heavy, dull impact echoes down the quiet hallway.
Oliver stumbles backward, hitting the wall hard before collapsing onto the floor, clutching his face in sheer shock.
Silence slams back down over the corridor.
I stare at Kai, my breath hitching in my throat.
The man who meticulously controls every breath, gesture, and emotion has just shattered that control in a single second.
Kai stands over Oliver, his jaw set, his chest rising and falling heavily as he looks down with a cold intensity.
"Kai—stop," I gasp, stepping instantly between them and placing my hand firmly against his chest.
He doesn't move toward Oliver again.
The restraint snaps back into place just as quickly as it vanished, though his heart is hammering wildly beneath my palm.
"We're leaving," I say quietly, looking up into his dark eyes.
Oliver groans on the floor, holding his swelling jaw, unable to speak.
Kai doesn't give him another glance.
He turns, taking my bag from my shoulder into his hand, and walks alongside me out toward the private parking exit.

The drive back to our residential building is completely silent.
Neither of us speaks in the car or in the elevator as it carries us up to our floor.
When the elevator doors slide open, Kai reaches for his keycard to head over to his unit, but I stop him, keycard in hand outside my own door.
"Come inside," I say softly.
I watch him hesitate for a fraction of a second before following me across the threshold.
I close the door, turning on the warm entryway lamp.
"Sit down. I'll get you some water," I say, gesturing toward the kitchen.
He doesn't sit, but he leans back against the edge of the granite counter, his suit jacket unbuttoned.
When I hand him a glass of cold water, my eyes drop to his right hand.
The knuckles are raw, and reddened.
I set my glass down, reach out, and gently take his right hand in mine, turning his wrist over to inspect the bruised skin.
"Why did you do that?" I ask softly, my thumb lightly brushing the edge of his wrist. "It would have been fine, Kai. I had already warned him. I was going to take the security footage to the police tomorrow."
Kai looks down at where my fingers hold his hand.
His throat works as he swallows.
"He touched you," he says, his voice rough, low, and laced with a quiet, raw worry that makes my heart hammer violently against my ribs. "He put his hands on you after you explicitly told him no. I wasn't going to stand there and watch it happen."
"You need to stop caring about me so much," I whisper, my pulse racing as the air in the room turns heavy.
Kai looks up from our joined hands, his gaze holding mine with an intensity that burns.
"I've tried for years, Annie."
There’s a brief heavy pause before he adds, "Unsuccessfully."
I stop, letting his words hang in the air for a moment.
I feel my chest rise and fall as I stare at him.
"Then stop giving me these confusing mixed signals."
"I never gave you mixed signals," Kai replies, his voice dropping an octave, steady and sharp with restrained emotion. "I was controlling myself. I was respecting the boundaries that you set."
The silence stretches between us, taut as a pulled wire.
"You remember the night at the hotel, don't you?" I ask quietly.
His dark eyes hold mine, unblinking.
"Yes. I remember every second of it."
I feel heat creep up all over me.
"Then why act like it never happened?" I demand softly, stepping closer into his space. "Was that you respecting boundaries?"
"You were the one who kissed me," Kai says, his voice cold, controlled, and quiet, placing the truth directly between us. "And you were the one who stopped. I thought you regretted it."
We stand inches apart, staring at each other in the quiet room, the weight of every unsaid word, every suppressed urge, and every lingering touch collapsing into the tiny space between us.
Standing here, looking at the bruised knuckles he earned to protect me and the dark, steady weight of his gaze, the resistance inside me crumbles.
Every lingering glance, every quiet late-night conversation, and every growing affection I tried to keep neatly categorized suddenly breaks past my defenses.
I look at his mouth, then back up to his eyes.
A single beat of hesitation catches in my throat—the silent, heavy realization that if I step across this line right now, there is no going back, no hiding behind professionalism, and no pretending we don't feel this anymore.
I realise I don't want boundaries anymore.
I reach up, threading my fingers into the hair at the nape of his neck, and pull him down to me.
The moment my lips touch his, it feels as if the last thread of Kai’s restraint completely snaps.
He lets out a low, ragged sound—almost a whimper—against my mouth at my touch, his arms instantly wrapping around my waist.
In one swift, fluid motion, he lifts me effortlessly onto the edge of the kitchen counter.
I wrap my legs tightly around his waist, pulling him flush against me.
Kai gives in so completely, kissing me back with a desperate, starving intensity, as if he has been suffocating for years.
His hands move up to cup my face and tangle in my hair, holding me close as the kiss deepens, consuming everything in the quiet of my apartment.
