Prologue

Author's Preface

[ Irene ]

The heavy black door stands at the end of the sub-basement corridor, encased in reinforced steel and sealed behind high-level biometric security.

I have watched that threshold from a distance for months, calculating the odds of breaking past it.

I have never stood this close.

Jude leans against the access panel, hands resting casually in his pockets.

He isn't blocking my path.

Nor is he standing in front of the scanner.

That alone should make me uneasy.

"You've been quiet all morning," he says, his voice soft, almost a caress in the stillness.

I keep my gaze fixed on the biometric console. "You noticed."

"I notice everything you do, Irene."

The admission comes without hesitation, carrying a tenderness that makes my chest tighten.

I turn my head to look at him. "That's unhealthy."

A small, affectionate smile touches the corners of his lips, warming his entire face.

"I'm well past healthy where you're concerned."

Months ago, standing in a space like this, Jude would have looked entirely different.

Colder. Sharp as a blade.

He would have dissected every breath I took, looking for betrayal hidden behind every question.

He had treated me like a threat to be managed.

Now, he just looks at me like I am his entire world.

There's no guardedness in him anymore, and no distance in his eyes.

Just complete devotion—as if the simple reality of me wanting something is enough for him to give up everything to let me have it.

"I need access," I say, my voice barely above a whisper.

His expression doesn't shift into suspicion.

It only softens further. "To what, sweetheart?"

"The Vault."

For a moment, neither of us speaks.

I feel my pulse ticking in my throat.

Not because I expect him to refuse—but because I've spent a decade convincing myself that taking this step would be the hardest fight of my life.

Jude glances at the black door, then brings his gaze back to mine, brushing a stray lock of hair gently behind my ear. "Why?"

A hollow laugh escapes me. "Does it matter?"

"If it matters to you, it matters to me."

"Jude..."

He studies me for a long, searching moment, his thumb lingering lightly against my cheek. "You're still looking for answers."

I say nothing. I can't.

He lets out a low, quiet sigh, not out of frustration, but something that sounds painfully close to affection.

He turns and steps directly up to the scanner, and my entire body locks up.

"Irene."

"What?"

"Come here."

For a second, I forget to breathe.

He presses his palm against the glass plate.

The interface flares to life, casting a bright blue glow over the sharp lines of his jaw.

"Jude, stop," I blurt, reaching out.

He catches my hand gently, lacing his fingers through mine with a soft, steady warmth.

"What are you doing?"

"Giving you whatever you need."

"You don't even know what I'm looking for in there."

"I don't need to," he says softly.

"And you're opening it anyway?"

This time, his smile reaches his eyes—warm, open, and completely defenseless.

The kind of look he used to reserve only for the dark, when he thought I was already asleep.

"I've spent a long time trying to get you to stop looking at me like I was your enemy," he murmurs, pulling my hand up to brush a soft kiss against my knuckles.

The console chimes high and sharp.

A secondary authorization prompt flashes red across the interface, requesting dual confirmation.

Jude doesn't hesitate.

He holds our joined hands over the glass, cradling mine in his.

"You're never going to rest until you find what you're looking for, are you?"

I stare into his eyes, my heart hammering against my ribs. "No."

"I know," he whispers, his eyes softening. "Then let me help you find it."

He holds my hand in his, then gently places my palm over his against the scanner.

The system pulses once. Twice.

Then glows a deep, solid green. ACCESS GRANTED.

Behind the glass, heavy pneumatic locks disengage with a deafening thud.

The massive vault door unlocks and begins to slide open, exposing the dark, silent interior beyond.

For ten years, I have lived with one burning certainty: somewhere inside the Verin empire is the Ghost Key —the answer to everything I've been trying to understand.

My father's death.

And Jude—the man who loves me so completely he would burn his own world down just to give me peace—has just willingly given me the one thing I spent months trying to take from him.

I step into the Vault.

Rows of encrypted servers wait in the darkness.

Security cases line the walls, each one holding pieces of the Verin empire I have spent years trying to understand.

For months, I have believed the Ghost Key is somewhere inside this room.

I move deeper into the Vault, opening one security drawer after another as I search for anything connected to the Ghost.

When I pull open the next one, a photograph lies inside.

My fingers go cold as I pick it up.

There are two children in the picture, small white flower crowns resting atop their heads.

A little girl in a white dress.

A boy beside her in a miniature black suit.

Their hands are clasped together.

I recognize myself first.

Then I look at the boy.

Slowly, I turn toward the man standing behind me.

"Jude?"

His posture remains relaxed, but something in his expression shifts, the warmth in his eyes touched by a stillness that hasn't been there before.

I look back at the photograph more thoroughly.

It is our wedding picture.

I have married Jude Verin once before.

And somehow, I have just never known it.
