Earth | Evelyn's Apartment
Auberon stepped into the apartment hallway, his sharp ears twitching the moment the door swung open. Someone is here.
As he crossed the threshold, Ethan—Evelyn's brother—flinched visibly at the sight of him, his eyes going wide.
Evelyn slipped right behind Auberon, stepping out from the corridor just as she caught sight of her brother.
"You are going with me later," she murmured quietly to Auberon, before flinching herself as Ethan stepped into view.
"Where the hell have you been?" Ethan demanded, his voice thick with cold annoyance. "And who is this? Wearing my stuff, too. Did he spend the night here?"
Evelyn let out a long, exhausted sigh, rubbing her temples. "Why didn't you call first?"
"I wonder why I had to come all the way here," Ethan snapped back, crossing his arms. "I called multiple times, and you didn't pick up."
Evelyn sighed, internally wincing as she remembered her phone sitting silently at the bottom of her bag, entirely ignored during the chaos on the ridge. Right, I haven't checked it.
"I'm sorry, Ethan," she offered, keeping her tone as placid as possible while she discreetly stepped a little closer to Auberon, hyper-aware of the high-elven prince standing rigidly beside her in stolen college apparel.
Ethan's sharp gaze flicked back and forth between his sister and the silver-haired stranger towering over her. The irritation in his posture slowly curdled into deep suspicion.
"Right. Sorry," Ethan repeated, narrowing his eyes as he took a deliberate step forward. "That doesn't answer my question, Ev. Who the hell is he, and why is he wearing my favorite hoodie?"
Evelyn's mind raced, scrambling to patch together a plausible excuse while standing under the harsh glare of her brother's scrutiny.
"He's a friend," Evelyn blurted out, forcing a tight, awkward smile as she stepped further into the entryway. "He just came into town for a few days, and... I offered for him to stay with me."
Ethan raised a skeptical eyebrow, his gaze lingering on Auberon's striking features, the unfamiliar silver hair, and the way the tall man stood with a rigid, unnatural grace that screamed out of place.
"A friend," Ethan echoed flatly, his tone dripping with doubt. He didn't look convinced in the least.
"Anyway," Ethan said softly, his sharp, suspicious edge fading into quiet disappointment. "Today is our parents' anniversary. Did you forget, too?"
Evelyn cursed internally, a heavy wave of guilt crashing down on her. How on earth did I forget? With high-elven royalty crashing into her life, magical portals, and rifle-toting strangers in the woods, the real world had completely slipped through the cracks.
"No way," she lied quickly, trying to sound offended that he would even suggest it. "I was actually just about to call you!"
Auberon stood completely still, watching the sibling exchange with silent, acute observation. When Ethan's gaze snapped over to him, narrowing with protective hostility, the high elf didn't blink or look away. Instead, he met the challenge head-on, his molten-lead eyes locking onto Ethan's with an unreadable, aristocratic intensity.
"What's your name?" Ethan demanded, stepping closer, his tone dripping with protective aggression. "Since you're her friend, I want to know everything about you. I'm her brother, as you can see."
Evelyn's stomach dropped. Oh god, don't let him introduce himself as a displaced crown prince of Aethyria. She opened her mouth to jump in with a fake name, but Auberon spoke first, his deep, resonant voice effortlessly filling the apartment entryway.
"Auberon," he replied smoothly, his posture remaining rigidly unyielding. He didn't offer a last name, nor did he shrink under Ethan's scrutiny. "And the sentiment is mutual, brother of Evelyn. Though I assure you, your curiosity regarding me pales in comparison to mine regarding this realm."
Evelyn palmed her face, suppressing a violent urge to smack him right across his aristocratic forehead. Why does he always have to sound like an ominous medieval monarch?!
Ethan let out a startled, high-pitched laugh, looking completely bewildered as he glanced between the two of them. "What the hell was that? Realm?" He shook his head, miraculously bypassing the fact that Auberon spoke with a strange, theatrical cadence, choosing instead to focus on the sheer pretension of it. "Is this guy for real, Ev? Is he a method actor, or did you pick up a weirdo from a Renaissance faire?"
"He's just... practicing for a project, Ethan!" Evelyn quickly interjected, stepping between them with a strained, frantic smile while giving Auberon a severe, warning glare out of the corner of her eye. "You know how it is. Artsy types."
Auberon smirked, the kind of slow, effortless expression that practically screamed royal arrogance and supreme confidence.
"What she said," Auberon repeated, his voice smooth and light, looking far too pleased with himself as he casually leaned against the doorframe.
Ethan's jaw tightened, a flash of annoyance flickering across his face. He couldn't entirely dismiss the guy; underneath the ridiculous phrasing and the stolen oversized hoodie, the man possessed a striking, undeniable presence that was frankly irritating. Ethan was acutely aware of just how effortlessly magnetic the stranger was, and it only made him more defensive.
"Ethan," her brother gritted out, his eyes narrowing into a sharp glare as he crossed his arms again. "And I'm watching you, Auberon."
Ethan caught Evelyn by the elbow and dragged her a few paces down the hallway toward the kitchen, out of earshot, though Auberon's sharp gaze followed every inch of the movement.
Keeping his voice to a harsh, frantic whisper, Ethan glared at her. "Tell me the truth—are you dating this guy?"
Evelyn felt her face heat up instantly, a flurry of panic scrambling her thoughts. Dating him? If only her brother knew that "this guy" was an actual literal prince from another dimension currently hiding from assassins and government conspiracies.
"What? No! Ew, gross—well, I mean, no, we are not dating," Evelyn hissed back, frantically waving a hand as she glanced over her shoulder to make sure Auberon wasn't close enough to hear. "He's just... crashing here for a couple of days. It's a long story, Ethan, I swear."
Ethan stared at her hard, trying to read every micro-expression on her face. "A long story. Right. Because you usually pick up silver-eyed weirdos who talk like Shakespeare and raid my closet for fun." He let out a dry, disbelieving breath. "You look exhausted, Ev. If he's giving you trouble, or if he's some kind of deadbeat—"
"He's not a deadbeat," Evelyn interrupted quickly, though she winced internally at how flimsy her defense sounded. "Seriously, I've got it under control. We need to focus on... you know. Today."
The sharp edge of irritation in Ethan's posture immediately softened, replaced by a heavy, somber shadow. The anniversary of their parents' passing always cast a quiet, agonizing pall over the two of them.
Ethan's shoulders slumped slightly, his gaze dropping to the floorboards. "Yeah. Right," he murmured, his voice losing its fight. "I just... I hated coming over and finding you completely off the grid. With everything, I didn't want to spend today alone."
Evelyn's chest tightened with a wave of deep, familiar grief. She reached out, giving her brother's arm a reassuring squeeze. "I'm sorry, Ethan. Truly. My phone just died, that's all. We'll go together, just like we always do."
Ethan nodded slowly, looking back up toward the living room where Auberon was standing silently like a sentinel. "Fine. But what about him?" Ethan lowered his voice further. "You're seriously going to leave him here alone while we go to the cemetery?"
Evelyn groaned quietly, pressing the heels of her hands against her eyes. Fantastic. Leaving an interdimensional elven prince unattended in a modern Earth apartment while visiting her parents' graves.
"No, he'll come with us," Evelyn muttered, dropping her hands with a sigh.
Ethan stared at her, utterly bewildered. "He's coming with us to the cemetery? Ev, are you listening to yourself? It's a somber, family thing—we aren't taking your eccentric new 'art project' roommate to visit Mom and Dad's graves."
"I know, I know," Evelyn said, rubbing the back of her neck as she cast another anxious glance back toward the living room. "I'll talk to him, alright? Just... give me a minute to explain."
Evelyn returned to the room to find Auberon deep in concentration, looking through a stack of her books.
He glanced up at her, his silver eyes unreadable. "I understand what you are about to say, Evelyn. This is a private moment—go pay your respects to your parents. I will simply wait here."
Evelyn looked at him and sighed. "Alright."
Ethan watched them warily from a distance, questions rolling through his mind. What kind of relationship do these two have, for her to trust him enough to leave him here alone? he wondered.
Far from the quiet tension of Evelyn's apartment, across the sprawling courtyards of the Sun Palace, the twin moons cast their cold, silver light down upon the stones and marbles of the royal ground.

Aethyria | The Sun Palace
The corridor exploded into sudden violence. Before Jeonran could even guide Linrel fully into the shadowed alcove, a sleek, bladed bolt splintered the stone pillar inches from his ear—no sound had warned of its coming.
The palace guard's rotation hadn't just been compromised; it had been entirely replaced by the Vaeliths. They moved like living shadows, silent even in full armor, their blades leaving no sound as they struck. And above all, they held no loyalty to any noble house—no allegiance that could be bargained with, no history that could be traced.
"Stay behind me," Jeonran commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, commanding register.
In a blur of motion, he drew his longsword, the tempered steel catching the amber glow of the wall sconces just as two figures lunged from the gloom. The first assassin struck with a downward arc meant to cleave through bone, but Jeonran parried the blow with a jarring clang that sent sparks cascading across the flagstones. Before the attacker could recover, Jeonran spun low, driving the pommel of his blade into the assassin's chest and sending him crashing hard against the masonry.
The second assailant closed in instantly, thrusting a dagger toward Jeonran's flank. Ducking inside the guard, Jeonran countered with a swift, brutal kick that disarmed the man, following up with a sweeping strike of his hilt that knocked the intruder unconscious.
Silence slammed back down over the corridor, broken only by the sound of their ragged breathing.
Without wasting a single heartbeat, Jeonran yanked a heavy velvet cloak from a decorative stand and swept it over Linrel's shoulders, pulling her tightly into the shadows. The stark, pale silk of her nightclothes would make them an immediate target under the harsh glare of the courtyard torches; to be seen wandering the palace grounds in her sleeping attire was scandalous enough, but to be caught fleeing assassins in it was fatal.
Guiding her with a firm, reassuring hand at her elbow, he bypassed the main gates where the high guard's rotations were now completely overrun. Instead, he dragged her toward a hidden tapestry, shoving it aside to reveal a labyrinth of private service tunnels carved directly into the sun-bleached stone of the cliffside. They sprinted through the damp, winding dark until they finally burst out past the palace walls, slipping undetected into the outer ring of the capital.
Minutes later, they reached his private residence.
The interior was quiet, dimly lit by glowing amber ward-stones embedded in the walls. Once the heavy oak door was securely bolted and warded behind them, Jeonran finally let out a measured breath, turning his dark, intense gaze back toward her to assess if she was truly safe.
"Your Highness, I apologize for getting there later than I intended," Jeonran cleared his throat, the formal address sounding slightly strained in the quiet sanctuary of his home.
He dropped his gaze, a rare flush of heat creeping up his neck. The embarrassment burning in his chest wasn't solely from the tactical failure—the agonizing realization that assassins had breached the palace inner sanctum while he was still too far away. It was a deeper, more personal mortification. He was painfully aware of how exposed he was, not just as a sworn protector, but by the undeniable truth of his own heart. She was, to put it lightly, the center of his deepest affections, and standing here with her in the fragile intimacy of his private halls, the weight of that unspoken devotion hung heavy between them.
Linrel pulled the heavy velvet cloak tighter around her shoulders, the thick fabric doing little to stop the lingering chill of the night air—or the adrenaline still humming through her veins. She looked up, her gaze catching the tension in Jeonran's posture, the way his jaw tightened as he avoided her eyes.
Knowing him, she recognized that particular stiffness immediately. It was the armor he put on whenever his duties collided too violently with his personal feelings.
"You got here when it mattered, Jeonran," Linrel said softly, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room. She took a tentative step closer, letting the dark fabric pool around her feet. "If you hadn't, I wouldn't be standing here right now. Do not blame yourself for the shadow's reach."
Jeonran finally raised his head, his hazel eyes meeting hers. The raw vulnerability mirrored in his expression made his breath hitch. He wanted nothing more than to close the distance between them, to pull her into his arms and block out the dangerous world waiting just outside his door, but years of rigid training and unrequited devotion held him firmly in place.
"The palace is no longer safe for you, Your Highness," Jeonran managed to say, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper as he fought to regain his composure. "Your brother would want me to protect you at all costs, so worry not. We will leave here. I will ensure you are safe. I swear by my name."
Linrel let out a soft, breathy sigh, the tension finally bleeding out of her shoulders as she heard the steadfast resolve in his voice. There was no hesitation in his promise—only the absolute, unyielding devotion of a man ready to tear the world apart before letting any harm touch her.
"I know you will, Jeonran," she murmured, taking that final, decisive step forward. She reached out, her fingers gently brushing against his sleeve before resting lightly over his hand. "And I trust you with my life. But we cannot simply vanish into the wild without a plan. If my brother's council is compromised, we need to know who else we can turn to."
Jeonran's gaze dropped to where her hand touched his, a faint shudder running through his frame at the simple contact. For a brief second, the heavy burden of their reality seemed to lift, replaced by the warmth of her proximity. He slowly turned his hand over, his fingers wrapping securely around hers, grounding them both in the quiet sanctuary of the room.
"There is an old sanctuary in the outer province, far beyond the reach of the High Council's network," Jeonran said, his voice firming up as tactical pragmatism took over once more. "We gather what supplies we can before dawn. Your brother has a plan for if something like this happened. I know where to take you."
Linrel's eyes watered, a sudden, heavy ache blooming in her chest. Always protecting her, always watching over her from the shadows, carrying the weight of a silent devotion even when he was not physically here beside her.
She blinked back the sudden moisture, swallowing the lump in her throat as she squeezed his hand. "He planned for this?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"He did," Jeonran confirmed, his hazel gaze steady and reassuring as he looked down at her. "He anticipated that the council's ambition would eventually outgrow their loyalty. He left provisions and a secure safehouse hidden in the borderlands. We just need to reach it."
He stepped closer, closing the remaining space between them, his thumb gently brushing away the single tear that managed to escape down her cheek.
"Rest for a brief moment, Your Highness," Jeonran murmured softly, his voice dropping to a tender, intimate register. "I will prepare the provisions and check the wards. When the twin moons reach their zenith, we ride."
