Chapter 13: When Chaos Found Its Name

Author's Preface

- Sixteen Years Earlier -

School wasn't gentle for the Lang kids.

It was loud.
It was war disguised as lessons- chalk dust like smoke, playgrounds like battlefields, and teachers who learned very quickly that peace was only a rumor around Langs.

Nathan and Knight sat together in the same class, same bench- like it had been decided by the universe itself.

Nathan was quiet, neat, and unreadable, the kind of boy who could silence a room just by looking up.

Knight was the opposite- restless fire in a school uniform, smirking at rules like they were meant to be broken.

And yet, somehow, the two of them fit.

Outside their class, the rest of their chaos lived in another corridor.

Ping was in a different class- small, clingy, soft-hearted, but loud the moment someone tried to pull him away from Nathan during recess. He would barge in during breaks, clutching Nathan's hand and refusing to let go until the bell rang again. He would sprint across the hallway like a tiny storm, grab Nathan's hand, and declare ownership with the seriousness of a king claiming his throne.

Jenn was calmer than most kids of her age, quietly observant, the type who didn't speak unless it mattered. She stayed close to Ping, subtly steering him away from trouble with a patience only she possessed.

And then there was Paola- little Paola- two years younger than Ping, but already a menace in training. She treated school like a playground built just for her. Frogs in lunchboxes. Ribbons tied to chair legs. Dares whispered into Ping's ear with glittering eyes.

If Ping was the spark, Paola was the gasoline.

Nathan always ended up fixing everything.

Knight always ended up laughing.

And somehow... even in all that chaos, they were happy.

Until the day the schoolyard screamed loud enough to pull even Nathan's attention away.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───

The corridor smelled like lunch- bread rolls, spilled juice, and that strange disinfectant the school used like it could scrub out chaos.

Nathan walked like the noise didn't exist. Calm. Measured. A perfect uniform without a wrinkle.

Knight, beside him, was a different kind of neat- shirt tucked in, tie loosened just enough to look like a rebellion. His eyes flicked everywhere, always hungry for trouble like it was a game only he knew how to win.

They were halfway across the courtyard when the sound hit.

A thud.

A sharp yelp.

Then laughter- mean, loud, cruel.

Knight's head snapped first.

Nathan didn't change pace, but his gaze shifted.

Near the back wall, where teachers rarely watched and rules didn't reach, a small crowd had gathered- boys in their age range, a little bigger, a little rougher. Four of them. Maybe five.

In the middle of them was one boy.

His hair was a mess like he'd fought the wind itself and lost. His cheek was smeared with dirt, his lip split, blood bright against his skin. One sleeve was half torn. His backpack lay on the ground like a casualty.

And still-

He stood upright.

Glaring like a predator.

A slingshot lay at his feet. A small pouch spilled marbles across the ground like scattered planets. Someone's shoes had laces tied together in a knot. There was powder- chalk? flour?- exploded across one boy's shirt, turning him into a coughing ghost.

It didn't take a genius to guess.

His prank had backfired.

And now he was paying for it.

The biggest boy lunged again, fist cocked back. "You little freak-"

The boy in the middle didn't flinch.

He swung first- fast, reckless. His knuckles cracked into someone's jaw with a solid CRACK that shut half the crowd up for a second.

Then three hands grabbed him at once.

He tore free with feral strength, elbowing one kid in the ribs, twisting away from another grip, spitting blood onto the pavement like it was a promise.

"Come on then!" he snapped, voice hoarse but burning. "All of you! I'll still win!"

Knight's mouth curved- half impressed, half delighted.

Nathan's eyes narrowed slightly. Cold focus. Like he was watching a puzzle piece click into place.

"That boy," Knight muttered, slowing.

Nathan followed his gaze. "Looks like Trouble."

Knight shook his head. "Looks like someone who refuses to bow down."

Another punch flew. The boy ducked, but not fully- his shoulder caught it. He staggered, teeth clenched, then headbutted the attacker hard enough to make the bully stumble back swearing.

The crowd roared louder.

One of the boys grabbed the fallen slingshot and raised it like a trophy. "Thought you were clever, huh? Thought you could embarrass us?"

The boy's eyes flared. "You deserved it!"

"You're dead," the bully spat.

Knight's smile vanished.

Without waiting, Knight walked straight toward the fight.

Nathan sighed- he knew that look in Knight's eyes.

The boys turned, startled, as Knight stepped right into the circle of violence.

The biggest one swung again.

Knight caught his fist midair.

Just grabbed it.

Stopped it like the punch weighed nothing.

The courtyard froze.

Knight didn't even look angry. He looked... bored.

"Enough," Knight's voice was firm, sharper than his normal voice in a way Nathan rarely heard.

The bully jerked his hand, trying to pull free. "Who the hell are you?"

Knight's grip tightened.

And then-

One of the boys glanced past Knight.

Saw Nathan.

All the color drained from his face so fast it was almost funny.

His eyes widened like he'd seen a ghost.

"-No," he whispered.

Another boy followed his gaze, then another.

It was instant. Like a chain reaction.

Fear- raw and irrational- ripped through them.

"Nathan Lang-" someone breathed.

The biggest boy's mouth opened, but no sound came out.

They didn't wait for Nathan to do anything.

Nathan didn't even speak.

He only looked at them.

And that was enough.

The group backed away in a messy scramble, tripping over marbles, bumping into each other, terror turning their limbs clumsy.

"Forget it!" one hissed, grabbing his friend's sleeve. "Let's go-GO!"

They retreated like soldiers running from a war they hadn't expected.

In seconds, the circle broke. The courtyard swallowed them whole.

Silence rushed in after them, thick and stunned.

Knight finally released the boy's fist, dusting his own hands like he'd stopped a minor inconvenience.

Then he looked at the boy in the middle.

The boy was still breathing hard, chest rising and falling like he'd swallowed thunder. Blood on his lip. Pride in his eyes.

He didn't say thank you.

Didn't relax.

He straightened slowly, shoulders squared as if even being rescued was an insult.

Knight raised a brow. "You fight like you don't plan on living long."

The boy's glare sharpened. "I wasn't losing."

"You were outnumbered," Nathan said, voice calm, factual.

The boy snapped his head toward Nathan, eyes narrowing like he was deciding whether Nathan was another threat.

"I don't need help," he spat.

Knight tilted his head, amused again. "Sure. That's why you were about to get folded like paper."

"Shut up," the boy shot back.

Nathan stepped forward- not aggressive, not hesitant. Just... inevitable.

"I'm Nathan," he said, simple. "And this is Knight."

The boy didn't shake his hand. Didn't even look down at it.

He stared at Nathan like he was trying to read him, find the weakness, find the trick.

Then his lips curled with defiance. "And why should I care?"

Knight's grin widened, delighted. "I like him."

Nathan didn't withdraw his hand. He didn't push.

He only watched the boy with that calm, steady ice- the same kind of calm that made bullies run without a single punch thrown.

"Because," Nathan replied, "you're hurt."

The boy's chin lifted. "So?"

"And you're still standing," Knight added, admiration threaded into his tone like a weapon. "That takes guts."

The boy's eyes flickered- just once, like something in him shifted but refused to show it.

He spat again, wiping his mouth with the back of his sleeve. "My prank was supposed to drop paint on their heads. Not marbles. Stupid string snapped."

Knight snorted. "So you accidentally created a battlefield."

"Yeah," the boy snapped. "And I'd do it again."

Nathan's eyes glinted faintly.

He saw it now-clear as daylight.

Not stupidity.

Not recklessness.

A boy who refused to bow down even when the world outnumbered him.

A boy who turned fear into laughter and pain into noise.

A boy who made silence impossible.

Nathan's hand stayed out.

Just... offering.

The boy stared at it like it was a trap.

Then Knight spoke first, voice softer but sharp in its certainty.

"You don't have to fight alone," Knight said.

The boy scoffed. "I always fight alone."

Nathan's expression didn't change.

"Then," he said, voice steady as law, "stop doing it."

A beat.

The boy blinked, like he hadn't expected that.

Not pity.

Not charity.

Just... acceptance.

Knight leaned closer, grin returning like flame. "What's your name?"

The boy hesitated- just long enough to prove it cost him something.

Then he muttered, like a curse. "Chen. Chen Rang."

Knight's eyes lit up. "Sounds like trouble."

Chen glared. "I am trouble."

Nathan's lips twitched- barely. Almost a smile, almost nothing.

"Good," Nathan said quietly. "We can work with that."

Chen's stare sharpened. Suspicious. Cornered. Like a wild animal expecting the cage.

Knight's grin softened, almost sincere for one breath. "Come on, Chaos."

Chen bristled instantly. "Don't call me that."

Knight shrugged. "You'll earn it."

Chen didn't move.

Didn't follow.

Not yet.

But as Nathan turned away, calm as ever, and Knight walked beside him like the world belonged to them-

Chen watched.

And for the first time that day, his fists unclenched.

Not because he trusted them.

Not because he felt safe.

But because something dangerous and unfamiliar slipped into his chest-

Curiosity .

And that was how it started.

Not with friendship.

Not with sweetness.

But with a boy who refused to bow...

and two others who refused to leave him behind.

"Ice watched.

Fire stepped forward.

And in the space between them-

Chaos finally found its place."

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───

From that day forward, Chen became a fixture in their lives.

Not invited. Not requested. Not negotiated.

He simply... appeared. Like thunder. Like a rumor. Like trouble the school never managed to contain.

He was brash, quick-tempered, and constantly at war with teachers as if rules were personal enemies.

Detention became his second classroom- and more often than not, Nathan and Knight sat beside him. Not because they misbehaved, but because they refused to let him sit alone.

Chen didn't understand what that meant at first.

He pretended he didn't care.

But his eyes always flicked toward them when the teacher turned away- watching, checking, making sure they were real.

It became routine.

Chen in detention, legs swinging like he owned the chair.

Knight beside him, bored and lethal, tapping a pen like it was a weapon.

Nathan on the other side, calm and unreadable, doing homework like the world wasn't ridiculous.

Sometimes Chen would whisper, "You know you two don't have to be here."

Knight would mutter, "Shut up."

Nathan would simply say, "Finish your assignment."

And Chen would- because somehow, when Ice spoke, Chaos obeyed.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───

There were food fights where Chen hurled bread rolls like grenades while Paola cheered from another table like a tiny war general.

"AGAIN!" she screamed, clapping like she'd discovered joy.

Chen, sweating with glory, yelled back, "YOU ARE MY FAVORITE SMALL PERSON!"

Nathan had stood up once, calm as ever, and the entire cafeteria had gone quiet like someone muted the world.

Knight leaned into Chen's ear and said, smug, "Watch this."

Nathan didn't shout.

He only looked around.

Everyone froze.

Even Chen paused mid-throw.

Then Nathan said politely, "Sit down."

And the war ended on command.

Chen stared at him like he'd just witnessed sorcery.

Knight smirked like he'd been waiting for this reaction his whole life.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ───

It didn't take long for Paola to join Chen's chaos like she'd been born for it.

Together they became a terror duo.

They filled water buckets and placed them above doors.

They replaced a teacher's chalk with glitter powder.

They fed the class hamster cookies until it became overweight and ungovernable.

At one point, they painted the headmaster's office door bright pink, leaving sticky handprints everywhere like a crime scene.

When the headmaster demanded to know who did it-

Chen pointed directly at Ping.

Ping pointed directly at Chen.

Paola pointed at herself proudly.

"I HELPED!" she announced.

Nathan ended up in Grandpa's study later with perfect posture and calm voice, explaining why the headmaster was threatening to resign.

Grandpa listened in silence... then asked only one question.

"Was it pink?"

Nathan paused. "...Yes."

Grandpa's mouth twitched.

Then he said, very calmly, "Good color."

Nathan stared.

Grandpa waved him away. "Fix it."

Nathan left.

And behind him, Grandpa Lang laughed quietly to himself.

By the time the weeks turned into months, Chen wasn't just the schoolyard fighter anymore.

He was everywhere.

In their lunches. In their detentions. In their chaos.

In the spaces between Nathan and Knight like he belonged there.

Grandpa never liked Chen's rough edges. The first time Chen stepped into the Lang Mansion, disapproval carved into his face like stone-

Nathan spoke quietly, without hesitation.

"He's with me."

Grandpa's silence was all the acceptance Chen ever needed.

Looking back now, Nathan's pen slowed, the words sinking into the page like an oath:

Chen wasn't just another friend.
He was family- the kind we hadn't searched for, but had found anyway.

And so, the schoolyard fighter found his place- not because he was saved, but because he was chosen.

"Some bonds aren't forged in peace-

They're born in Fire, tested in Chaos, and made unbreakable by choice."

Next in Then Came The Chaos

Chaos had already found his brothers.

But he wasn't ready for something quieter.

Sharper.

More dangerous than Fire.

Because the next collision

wouldn't end in bruises.

It would begin in silence.
