Chapter 07: Chaos, Drama and Ribbons

Author's Preface

The house was quieter than usual that morning. Mrs. Lang had gone into labor, and Nathan sat cross-legged on the couch, Ping asleep against his chest, one small hand clutching the hem of Nathan's shirt. For the first time in months, Nathan felt something like stillness-soft, warm, heavy as sunlight.

Then came the cry.

When Paola was born, Nathan didn't understand the meaning of "sister," but he understood small. Smaller than Ping had ever been. Red-cheeked and wailing like the world owed her something. Mrs. Lang was crying and laughing at once, and Nathan stood in the doorway, Ping in his arms, watching the little bundle that looked both delicate and furious.

"She's loud," Ping declared, squinting.

Mrs. Lang smiled tiredly. "She's perfect."

Nathan said nothing, only nodded, as if agreeing was a kind of promise.

Time slid forward in bursts-like the light that flickered between seasons.

By the time Paola learned to walk, she was already trouble. Tiny feet thumping through corridors, ribbons falling from her hair like breadcrumbs marking the path of chaos.

Unlike her brother, she wasn't clingy - she was fiery. A little storm in dresses and ribbons, always running around the mansion, pulling pranks, climbing trees, stealing cookies from the kitchen.

Her favorite victim was Ping.

If Ping climbed onto Nathan's lap, Paola climbed after him.

If Ping handed Nathan a drawing, Paola scribbled on it.

"You can't keep him all to yourself," Paola argued, tugging Nathan's arm with all her tiny strength.

Ping glared at her, wrapping his arms around Nathan's waist as if claiming territory. "He is Mine!"

Nathan laughed, pulling both of them close. "I belong to both of you, don't fight," he said gently, smoothing down Ping's messy hair while balancing Paola on his knee.

It was war-tiny, barefoot, and unending.

Ping would pout until his eyes shone with tears, and Paola, seeing that, would look guilty for exactly three seconds before tugging his sleeve and starting all over again.

Nathan, trapped between the two of them, could only laugh-something that had once felt impossible now spilling out of him easily.

Days blurred into laughter, bruised knees, and flour fights.

Ping followed Nathan like a shadow, carrying Snowball everywhere. Paola followed both of them, trailing ribbons and chaos. Nathan learned to braid her hair-not well, but enough to make her giggle and call him Big Bro in the tiny voice that melted every defense he'd ever built.

Mrs. Lang's voice echoed through the halls like a conductor guiding a very dramatic orchestra.

"Harold! Your children have destroyed the kitchen again!"

Mr. Lang only chuckled, moving in with a towel to clean up batter while Nathan wiped frosting off Ping's nose. Paola sat on the counter, legs swinging, tasting icing like a queen overseeing her kingdom.

But between the laughter, there were quieter things.

Nights when Ping would crawl into Nathan's bed, whispering, "She gets more hugs than me."

Nathan would blink, half-asleep, then wrap an arm around him. "That's because she's smaller."

"I was small too," Ping murmured.

"I know," Nathan said softly. "you're my Little One."

Ping's brow furrowed. "Then who is she?"

Nathan smiled. "Yours too. You'll see."

Paola was mischief wrapped in ribbons. She had a way of turning the mansion upside down with her antics - sneaking into Grandpa's study to steal his glasses, hiding sweets in her pockets to bribe the maids, and convincing Nathan to help her build "castles" out of expensive books.

Whenever she was scolded, she ran straight to Nathan, hiding behind him like a shield. "Big Bro! Protect me!" she would whisper, eyes wide with mock innocence.

And Nathan always did - taking the blame, soothing Grandpa's stern temper, and gently teaching Paola where mischief crossed the line.

To her, Nathan wasn't just a brother. He was her safe haven, the one who turned her chaos into laughter.

By the time Nathan was seven, his place in the Lang family had solidified. He wasn't the adopted child anymore; he was the center around which the others revolved. Ping's anchor. Paola's protector. Mr and Mrs. Lang's eldest son. Grandpa's silent confidant.

One afternoon, they ended up outside under the big oak tree, Ping sitting protectively in Nathan's lap while Paola pouted on the grass. Nathan looked from one to the other, his patience worn thin but his heart full to bursting.

"You two are supposed to love each other," he scolded lightly.

Ping crossed his arms. "I do! But she keeps stealing you!"

Paola glared. "You always hog him!"

Nathan sighed, pulling them both closer until they fit under his arms like mismatched puzzle pieces.

"You can share me," he said.

Ping hesitated. Then, still clinging to Nathan's shirt, he whispered, "Okay... but I'm first."

Nathan laughed quietly, pressing a kiss to the top of his head.

"Always, Little One," he promised.

Paola grinned then, triumphant and jealous all at once, and climbed into Nathan's other arm.

The three of them sat like that until sunset-Fire, Sunshine, and the Quiet in between.

And though no one said it aloud, the world had quietly chosen its axis.

Nathan wasn't just the eldest anymore.

He was home.

"Some bonds are loud with laughter, others whisper through chaos--

But the truest ones are born in the tug of small hands that refuse to let go."

Nathan closed the diary slowly.

The final words still lingered in his chest like an echo-soft, stubborn, impossible to shake. He set the diary down on the desk with careful hands, as if even the cover deserved respect.

The study was quiet.

Too quiet.

Then-

Warmth pressed against his back.

Bare skin. Firm arms sliding around his waist with a familiarity that didn't ask permission. A chin settled on his shoulder like it belonged there, breath brushing the side of his neck-lazy, possessive, intimate.

Nathan didn't flinch.

Didn't turn.

As if this was normal.

As if this was home.

A voice-low, amused-murmured right into his ear.

"Honey."

Nathan's fingers stilled on the diary.

The arms around him tightened, just slightly.

"You spend too much time in past," the voice teased, but there was something sharper beneath the softness. Something protective. "I'm your present, Nate."

The lamp light caught the edge of a grin as the man nuzzled closer, shameless.

Nathan finally exhaled, calm returning like Ice sealing over Fire.

He didn't lean away.

He only whispered one word-quiet, familiar, dangerous.

" Knight ."

End of The First Ray of Sunshine

The diary closed.

The past went quiet.

Some stories end when the diary closes.

Others begin when Fire wraps around Ice-

reminding him he doesn't live in memories anymore.
