Chapter 4: The Only Thing Worth Seeing

Author's Preface

He leans in, his broad shoulders casting a shadow that finally stills the dancing patterns of light on my floral dress. The air between us grows thick, heavy, and saturated with the intoxicating scent of his cold rain and expensive soap, mixing with the sweet, lingering jasmine on my skin.

Oh God, he is so close.

"You think you're invisible," he rasps, his voice a low, granular vibration that seems to settle deep in my very marrow. "But I've spent weeks watching the way your heart betrays you."

He doesn't touch me yet, but he tracks the movement with his dark, stormy eyes-the way the skin at the base of my throat jumps in a frantic, rhythmic thrum. My pulse point is going totally wild.

"I know that hollow at the base of your neck," he murmurs, his heavy brow uncreased for once, revealing a searingly raw intensity that makes my breath hitch.

"I've watched that pulse point from across the street, counting the beats. I know exactly when you're startled, and I know exactly when I've made your breath catch. Right now, it's beating like a trapped bird. You can't hide from me when your own body is screaming that you know I'm here."

I let out a soft, shaky exhale, my eyes wide and liquid. I can feel the flush heating my skin as my hands grip the cold edge of the table, pressing my thumb hard into my palm to try and anchor myself.

A ghost of a smile-the first I have ever seen on him-tugs at his scarred jawline.

"And then there's that dimple," he whispers, his gaze dropping to the corner of my mouth. What is happening to me?

"That tiny, hidden dent that only appears when you're trying to be serious but something lovely has caught your eye. It's a secret you don't even know you're keeping. I've written four pages trying to get the depth of it right. I wanted to know if it was deep enough to catch a tear, or if it only existed for me to find."

He looks back up, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a hunger that makes the lovely afternoon feel suddenly, intoxicatingly dangerous.

"So don't tell me I don't know you. I've memorized the map of you while you were busy trying to disappear."

The air between us has become a complete vacuum, pulling us closer until I can see the golden flecks in his dark eyes. I can't even make myself pull away. Instead, I find myself leaning right into the heat of his gaze, my breath coming in shallow, jagged hitches.

"You're so sure of yourself," I whisper, my voice a soft, daring challenge. "You're so sure you know what this pulse means."

He doesn't answer with words. He can't.

Slowly-with a deliberation that makes my entire world go completely still-he reaches across the table. His hand is a landscape of rugged grit and old scars, looking massive and dangerous against the dainty white tablecloth.

He doesn't grab me. He doesn't rush. With a tenderness that feels more intense than any violence, he slides his large hand upward. His rough, calloused thumb finds its home, settling with agonizing precision right over the hollow of my throat.

I let out a soft, broken gasp, the table edge digging into my hands as I freeze in my chair.

The heat of him is staggering. Looking at him, he is just so absolutely edible, yet so terrifying. The rough grain of his skin against my silken neck is a total sensory explosion. Under the pressure of his thumb, my pulse point doesn't just thrum-it surges. It's a frantic, wild rhythm, hitting against his skin like a drumbeat of pure, unadulterated yearning.

He feels it. Every single leap. Every skip. Every desperate surge of my blood.

His heavy brow furrows, his jaw tightening until it looks like cracked stone as he feels the physical evidence of how much I want him. His thumb moves in a slow, possessive circle over the jumping vein, his touch both a question and a total claim on me.

"I don't have to be sure," he rasps, his voice dropping to a low, granular growl that makes my knees turn to pure water.

"I can feel it. Your heart is practically screaming my name against my skin."

I look up at him, my eyes liquid and wide, my dimple flashing briefly as my lips part in a silent plea. I feel completely exposed, my most private secret laid bare under the weight of his thumb. But I don't pull back. I lean right into his massive hand, my raven hair spilling over his scarred wrist like silk over stone.

"Then stop listening," I breathe, my gaze locking onto his hooded, hungry eyes. "And do something about it."

For one electric, agonizing second, he doesn't move. He stands on the precipice of everything he'd ever written about-the scent of me, the frantic thrum of my life against his skin, the way my lips are beckoning him like a sanctuary. He could have leaned in. He could have kissed me right then and there.

Instead, his hand suddenly flinches.

As if my skin had just turned to white-hot iron, he jerks his hand back. The contact snaps instantly, leaving the air between us cold and vibrating. He stands up so abruptly his chair screeches against the pavement-a harsh, jagged sound that completely shatters the quiet of the garden.

"I can't," he rasps, his voice no longer a sexy rumble, but a broken, desperate growl.

I sit there completely frozen, my hand flying up to my neck to cover the burning spot where his thumb just was. My skin is still flushed pink from his heat, tingling where the scent of cold rain and expensive soap still lingers on my skin.

"Why?" I breathe, my eyes wide with a sudden, sharp sting of rejection. "You said you've been watching me. You said I was the only thing worth seeing."

He clutches his diary tightly against his side, his heavy brow casting a shadow so deep it practically hides his eyes. He looks like a rugged stranger again-the man of grit and dark secrets who doesn't belong in my world.

"Seeing you is one thing," he mutters, his jaw working as he fights the urge to reach for me again.

"But touching you... touching you is a promise I'm not allowed to make. I told you, I bring the storm. And you..." He looks down at my flowy floral dress, looking so fragile against his intensity.

"You were meant for the sun. Not for a man who has to hide in the dark just to feel alive."

He doesn't wait for me to answer. He turns on his heel, his charcoal shirt disappearing into the shadows of the stone archway before I can even find my voice.

I remain at the table, my heart still racing against the palm of my own hand, staring at the empty space he left behind. The silence of the café is heavier now, filled with the ghost of a touch that told me more than his words ever could.

What did I do wrong?

Panic surges through me, a violent wave of old insecurities telling me a man that magnificent could never truly want me. I take a step toward the empty archway, wanting to shrink back into the wallpaper.

But then I breathe in. The air is still thick with his scent-cold rain and expensive soap.

I remember the way his massive frame went totally rigid when I leaned into his touch, the desperate, broken growl in his chest. That wasn't the sound of a man who wanted to leave. It was the sound of a man terrified because he wanted to stay.

The panic vanishes, replaced by an electric certainty that settles straight into my marrow.

He'll be back.

A man doesn't spend a month memorizing the map of your soul just to walk away. He is a storm running from the light, but he left his heart trapped right under my thumb-and he has no idea how to live without it anymore.

Ink & Espresso

I felt it. The pulse. It was under my thumb, beating like a captured bird. For a moment, I forgot I was a ghost. Her skin is so warm it’s devastating. I had to pull away. If I stayed a second longer, I would have pulled her into my world, and she’s too bright to be buried in my dark. I left her sitting there. I can s

till feel the ghost of her cheek on my hand. It’s the only part of me that feels alive.
