A Stranger Behind a Sunset

Author's Preface

Winter mornings had a way of making time move slower.

The world outside Luna's window was still quiet, wrapped in a pale layer of cold air. The kind of morning where leaving the warmth of a blanket felt like a personal challenge.

Luna had no urgent plans that day.

No places she needed to be. No schedule waiting for her. No reason to hurry.

So she stayed.

Curled beneath her blanket, with only her hands visible as she held her phone, Luna scrolled lazily through her social media feed.

The internet was strange.

Thousands of people were constantly sharing pieces of their lives.

Some shared achievements. Some shared memories. Some shared moments that looked perfect enough to belong in a movie.

And some, like Luna, simply shared things they found beautiful.

A flower. A cloudy sky. A quiet corner of a street.

Things that didn't need explanations.

After a while, she opened her inbox.

The familiar flood of messages appeared.

Advertisements.

Collaboration requests.

Random conversations from people she had spoken to once or twice — some familiar, others barely recognizable.

Luna scrolled through them without much interest.

Then she stopped.

A small profile picture caught her attention.

A sunset.

Nothing complicated.

Just an orange sky with the sun resting near the horizon.

For some reason, Luna tapped on it.

The chat opened.

There was only one message.

Hi.

Luna stared at the word for a moment.

Simple.

Almost too simple.

She didn't reply right away. Instead, curiosity led her fingers toward the person's profile.

The account was surprisingly familiar.

Not because she knew the person.

Because of the things they noticed.

There were pictures of flowers.

Not expensive bouquets.

Not carefully arranged decorations.

Just flowers growing wherever they happened to exist.

A few pictures of skies.

A few quiet places.

And then she saw it.

A cat sitting beside a window.

Luna stopped scrolling.

Her eyes stayed on the picture longer than she expected.

The cat looked comfortable.

The sunlight coming through the window made the whole picture feel warm.

She smiled slightly.

Maybe she spent a little too long looking at it.

But she liked cats.

And sometimes small things had a way of holding people's attention.

Eventually, she returned to the chat.

Her fingers moved across the keyboard.

Hi.

She placed her phone down.

For a few minutes, nothing happened.

Then—

A notification appeared.

She picked up her phone again.

I like your pictures.

Luna blinked.

Then a small smile appeared on her face.

It wasn't a complicated compliment. It wasn't exaggerated. It was simply someone appreciating something she had shared.

She typed back.

Thanks.

After a moment, she added:

I liked your cat picture by the window.

The reply came after a short while.

Really?

Then another message followed.

I like taking pictures of him.

Luna smiled.

The conversation continued naturally.

Not like a forced attempt to impress someone.

Not like strangers trying to fill silence.

Just two people talking about things they happened to notice.

Flowers.

Photography.

Little moments.

Eventually, the topic returned to Luna's post.

I liked your picture of those flowers.

Luna looked at the message.

The white camellias.

She glanced toward her window, remembering the garden from yesterday.

She typed:

Oh, those? I just found them in a small garden near my place. They were growing by themselves.

A simple answer, because to Luna, it really was simple. She hadn't expected anyone to notice.

The conversation continued.

Minutes passed.

Then more minutes.

Half an hour disappeared without either of them realizing it.

It was strange.

Usually, conversations with strangers faded quickly.

A few messages.

A few polite replies.

Then silence.

But this felt different.

Not because they knew each other.

They didn't.

They were still strangers.

Yet somehow, "this stranger" seemed to notice the same things she did.

The small things.

The things most people ignored.

Eventually, Luna checked the time.

She sighed softly.

She had other things to do. Her normal routine was waiting.

She set her phone aside and got out of bed.

But as she walked toward the window, she noticed something unusual.

A small feeling remained.

Something warm.

Something she couldn't quite explain.

Maybe it was because, for once, she had found someone who understood why a random flower beside a road was worth photographing.

Someone who stopped scrolling.

Someone who looked.

Luna smiled faintly, carrying that small warmth with her as she continued with her day.
