The King

Author's Preface

By the middle of the second week, the heatwave had settled into a rhythm, and so had Jax.

He moved through the factory like a man possessed. He wasn't just fixing machines; he was conducting an orchestra. A broken sensor on Line 1? Fixed in five minutes. A jammed conveyor on the paint line? Cleared before the supervisor even noticed.

He felt invincible.

He had cracked the code. He had figured out the algorithm of his own life. It was a delicate, dangerous balance, but as long as he kept moving, nothing fell.

06:00 AM: Clock in. Check the production schedule. Send a "Good morning" text to Stacy. Usually something practical, like "Don't forget to call the landscaper," or "I transferred money for the electric bill." It kept her happy. It kept the door open .

08:30 AM: Misty.

Misty was his caffeine. She was the sugar rush that got him through the morning slump. Every day, right after the production meeting, she would sneak away from Line 4.

She had started "nesting" in the back of the Parts Storage room. She had actually brought a fuzzy pink blanket to lay over the concrete floor so her knees wouldn't get dirty.

She would be waiting for him there, eyes wide and hopeful. She brought him things. Cookies. Energy drinks. A new pair of work gloves because she noticed his were fraying.

"You look tired," she'd whisper, tracing the circles under his eyes. "Let me take care of you.".

And she did. She was soft where the factory was hard. It was easy. It was uncomplicated—as long as he didn't think too hard about the way she looked at him when he zipped up his pants.

12:00 PM: Deb.

Deb was his lunch. She was the protein. The substance.

She never brought him cookies. She brought him challenges. She would text him a location—usually her truck, or sometimes the Compressor Room if the heat was too bad outside—and a time.

Today, it was the Compressor Room.

Jax walked in, locking the heavy steel door behind him. Deb was leaning against the yellow railing of Compressor #3, wearing tight black jeans and a tank top.

She didn't smile when he walked in. She walked straight up to him and buried her face in his shirt, inhaling sharply.

"You smell like vanilla," she accused.

"It's the soap," Jax lied, his heart skipping a beat.

"It's her ," Deb spat, shoving him backward against the vibrating metal casing of the compressor. "I told you to wash her off. You’re sloppy, Jax."

Sex with Deb wasn't about comfort. It was about power. It was a wrestling match where nobody lost. She bit him. She scratched him. She demanded things from him that he didn't even know he wanted to give.

"Prove it," she growled against his mouth. "Prove you're not hers.".

When he walked away from her twenty minutes later, he felt drained and rewired, his muscles aching in a way that had nothing to do with work.

04:00 PM: The Cool Down.

He would go back to the Super 8. He would shower, scrubbing the scent of vanilla and peppermint off his skin. He would drink a beer from the mini-fridge. And then, he would call Stacy.

They talked about the kids. They talked about the house. It was boring. It was domestic. It was the anchor that kept him from floating away entirely .

He was winning. He was actually winning.

On Wednesday afternoon, the heat index hit one hundred and two.

Jax was in the Maintenance Cage, drinking a Gatorade and trying to cool down in front of a box fan. He felt good. Tired, but good .

Ryder walked in, looking like he had just swam across a lake. His shirt was soaked through, clinging to his chest.

"Jesus," Ryder panted, grabbing a water bottle from the cooler. "It's brutal out there. Line 3 just overheated. Again.".

"I'll check the coolant levels," Jax said, not moving.

Ryder looked at him. He frowned. "You look... relaxed.".

"I'm pacing myself," Jax said, leaning back in his chair. "Marathon, not a sprint.".

Ryder wiped his face with a rag. He looked around to make sure they were alone, then lowered his voice.

"You know people are talking, right?".

Jax stiffened. "Talking about what?".

"About you. About the... extracurriculars." Ryder gestured vaguely toward the floor. "Misty is walking around telling people you're 'working things out.' And Deb... Deb is walking around like she just ate the canary.".

"Let them talk. As long as the machines are running, nobody cares.".

"You're playing a dangerous game, Jax," Ryder warned. "Juggling chainsaws.".

"I got it under control," Jax said, standing up. He clipped his radio to his belt. "Misty is happy. Deb is happy. Stacy is... thawing. I'm handling it." .

"Handling it," Ryder repeated, shaking his head. "Famous last words.".

"Just fix Line 3, Ryder. Leave the rest to me.".

The afternoon shift was interrupted by the crackle of the PA system.

"Attention all personnel. Please report to the Main Aisle for a mandatory all-hands meeting. Repeat, mandatory meeting.".

The machines wound down. The sudden silence was jarring. Three hundred workers shuffled toward the center of the plant, forming a sweaty, tired crowd.

Preston stood on a raised platform, holding a microphone. He was wearing a linen suit that looked impossibly cool given the temperature. Rhonda stood next to him, looking like his bodyguard.

Jax stood near the front, arms crossed. He saw Misty to his left, beaming at him. He saw Deb to his right, checking her watch.

"Thank you all for coming," Preston boomed, his voice echoing off the metal rafters. "I know it's been a tough week. The heat. The quotas. You've all been working incredibly hard.".

He smiled, a shark-like baring of teeth.

"To show my appreciation, I've decided we need a morale booster. Something to bring us all together. Next Saturday, we will be hosting the First Annual Press Line Family Cookout.".

A murmur went through the crowd. Free food?.

"Right here in the south lot," Preston continued. "We'll have tents, catered BBQ, games for the kids. And I want all of you to bring your families. Husbands. Wives. Children.".

Jax felt his stomach drop.

Families.

"It is mandatory for all department heads to attend," Preston said, his eyes finding Jax in the crowd. "We want to meet the people who support you at home. The people who make your hard work possible.".

Preston's gaze lingered on Jax. It wasn't a friendly look. It was a challenge.

"Isn't that right, Jax? I'm sure your wife would love to see where you spend so much of your time.".

The microphone amplified the silence. Everyone turned to look at Jax. Misty looked confused. Deb looked amused.

"Uh... yes, sir," Jax mumbled, his voice tight.

"Excellent," Preston said. "Because when we mix our work family with our real family... well, that's when we really get to know each other.".

He handed the mic to Rhonda and stepped down, disappearing into the crowd of suits.

Jax stood frozen. The juggling act had just gotten a lot more complicated.

"Did you see his face?" Tammy whispered, lighting a cigarette with shaking hands.

"He looked like he swallowed a wrench," Barb laughed, leaning against the railing.

"Preston knows," Tammy said. "He has to know. Why else would he make a point of inviting the wives?".

"Preston loves a train wreck," Barb said, exhaling a cloud of smoke. "He just bought front row tickets.".

"So what happens next Saturday?".

"Next Saturday?" Barb pointed her cigarette at the parking lot. "Next Saturday, Jax has to bring Stacy here. Into the lion's den. He has to introduce her to Misty. He has to introduce her to Deb.".

"He's gonna die," Tammy said.

"He's gonna wish he was dead," Barb corrected. "Jax thinks he's the King of the factory. But Preston just reminded him who built the castle.".

Barb flicked her ash onto the concrete.

"Hope he enjoys his week, Tam. Because the bill comes due on Saturday.".
