Kei opened his eyes, squinting at a thin beam of light slipping through the narrow bars of a nearby window. For the first time in so long, he slept through the whole night. Not without dreams – no, the nightmares had been there, but they wouldn’t let him wake up. His bones ached from the marble platform that served as a bed, and the cold morning wind creeping through the cracks made him shiver. The small beam of sunlight did little to warm him before it vanished behind storm-heavy clouds. The air in the room was heavy, smelled of rain and stone, tinged with something metallic – like the pulse of magic itself.
Baran and Velara were still sleeping on the other two platforms beside him in the circular chamber. In the faint light, they looked peaceful. But even in rest, Kei could see the quiet weight they carried – the kind of calm earned only after surviving too much. He noticed they were close to his age – Baran a bit older, Velara maybe slightly younger. Two kids that one would never imagine were warriors on an ordinary day.
Yet yesterday had been anything but ordinary. And today, Kei knew, would demand even more. His fear had cooled into something heavier, sharper – a determination to uncover what these people wanted from him, and to find a way out of this cursed place.
There was a quiet knock on the old wooden door. Baran and Velara woke at once, ever so ready for a combat. The door opened slowly with a squeak, and Liora emerged from the dark hallway.
“Good," she said softly, her voice a bit commanding. “You are all awake.”
She entered the room without waiting for an invitation. Her eyes lingered briefly on Kei before turning to Baran and Velara.
“There is much to be done today. The forest has spoken, and it seems our guest has stirred more than old memories.”
Her gaze shifted back to Kei. “Come,” she said. “It is time you understood why the shadows chose you.”
Kei followed in silence as they passed through a series of arched corridors, dimly lit by threads of light running beneath the walls. He could sense that there was a time when this place served as a haven for its people. As a refuge for lost souls trying to find their way back, training their minds and powers.
They emerged into a wide open terrace that overlooked the mountains. Mist drifted through the air like breath. Below stretched the forest, silver leaves shimmering under the morning light. Above, dark clouds gathered, low and heavy, as if the sky itself were listening. Liora stepped closer to the edge, her robes stirring in the breeze.
“Do you feel it, Kei?” she asked softly. “The pull beneath your skin. The weight of the world you do not yet understand.”
Kei hesitated. “I feel like the air itself is breathing.”
“Our world lives through breath – through balance.” Her gaze shifted towards the horizon. “The Four Realms are that breath. When they move together, life thrives. When they fracture, fear takes form.”
Baran crossed his arms. “You mean the Four Fears?”
Liora nodded. “Each realm carries its own fear, its own truth. Water fears loss – the drowning of what once was. Ink fears oblivion – the end of a memory. Light fears truth – the wounds that cannot hide. And shadow...” She turned to Kei, eyes sharp. “Shadow fears itself.”
“So, what do you want me to do? How exactly am I going to help a world I have never been to?” Kei tried to conserve his anger, but the fear of the unknown was taking a toll on him.
Liora smiled softly; her expression remained unreadable. “The forest chose you because your soul carries echoes of all four realms. You are the mirror they have been waiting for. You need to face your fears, only then will you remember who you truly are, how your power can save us all.”
Velara spoke, her voice wary. “Many who have tried to cross the Four Fears never came back. There must be another way.”
“This is the only way,” Liora said sternly. “The bridge between our worlds is breaching. Once the shadows enter the human world, they will gain infinite power. And the balance will be gone forever. I will teach Kei how to listen to fear, not fight it.”
She placed her hand on Kei’s shoulder with cold tenderness.
A silence hung heavy, broken only by the rush of wind through the distant trees.
Finally, Liora looked back, her voice gentler now, almost kind.
“Come. The chamber awaits. If the realms truly called you here, they will show you what you are meant to see.”
The three of them followed Liora back inside the temple. She led them through a vast hall, down a spiraling staircase, and into a small chamber. The floor was not marble but a smooth, living surface - cool beneath their feet, faintly pulsing as though it were breathing. Threads of light ran along the walls, brighter here than anywhere else. Kei felt that they had entered the heart of the temple. In the centre of the room lay a vast mosaic. Four swirling emblems met in a perfect circle – ink, water, shadow, and light – each crafted from glimmering fragments of crystal and metal. The shapes shimmered faintly, as if in rhythm with Kei’s heartbeat.
Liora’s voice broke the silence. “Welcome to the Hall of Echoes. Here, the heart remembers what the mind chose to forget. The Fears have waited a long time for your arrival, Kei. Now you must face them.”
She gestured toward the symbols on the ground.
“Sit within the circle. Breathe. Listen. When you are ready, the Fears will speak. And don’t worry, I will guide you through.”
He hesitated for a moment before stepping onto the mosaic. Baran watched him closely, ready to fight any demons that might emerge. Velara turned her face to the wall, as though all of this brought back memories of immense pain to her.
A strange stillness settled over the chamber. The lights dimmed, and for a heartbeat, it felt as though the world itself were holding its breath.
Then Liora’s voice came again, soft but edged with power.
“Now… let the first Fear find you.”
