Chapter 13: The Temple of Reason

The credentials had been prepared six weeks in advance.

Dr. Aleksander Novak, visiting research scholar from the University of Warsaw, specialising in particle detector calibration systems. The name was clean, the biography was clean, the academic record was clean, all of it assembled with the particular care of someone who understood that the difference between a convincing identity and an unconvincing one was rarely the large details and almost always the small ones. The university email address responded when tested. The published papers existed and were retrievable. The references, if called, would confirm what the paperwork said.

The assassin had spent eleven years building profiles of people who used false identities. He knew precisely what made them fail.

He arrived at CERN's main reception on a Tuesday morning carrying a laptop bag, a rolling suitcase, and the expression of a man who had made this kind of journey many times before and found it neither exciting nor particularly demanding. The receptionist processed his credentials with the efficiency of someone who handled visiting scholars regularly and had no reason to look beyond what the system confirmed. His badge was printed. His access level was assigned. A junior administrator walked him to the visiting researchers block and pointed out the cafeteria and the nearest laboratory entrance and wished him a productive stay.

He thanked her with the mild and slightly distracted politeness of a man whose mind was already on his work.

Then he was alone inside CERN.

He spent the first day doing exactly what Dr. Aleksander Novak would have done. He attended a briefing for visiting researchers. He ate in the cafeteria at reasonable hours. He asked appropriate questions of the colleagues he encountered, technical questions, the kind that demonstrated familiarity with the field without revealing anything about his actual purpose. He took notes. He was unremarkable in every way that mattered.

In the evenings he walked.

CERN was not a single building. It was a city within a city, a sprawling complex of laboratories and offices and technical facilities spread across the Franco-Swiss border, connected by roads and corridors and underground passages that stretched for kilometres beneath the surface. The Large Hadron Collider alone ran in a circular tunnel twenty seven kilometres in circumference, buried a hundred metres below the ground, its existence detectable from the surface only by the occasional ventilation shaft or access point rising from the earth like the punctuation marks of something enormous being written underground.

He walked every accessible corridor. He noted every camera position, every security checkpoint, every access restriction. He timed the intervals between security patrols with the automatic precision of someone who had been doing this kind of assessment for over a decade and had never needed to write anything down.

On the second day he found the primary laboratory.

It occupied the lower level of one of the older buildings, a long rectangular space filled with the particular controlled chaos of serious scientific work, screens displaying data streams, equipment in various states of assembly and disassembly, the low constant hum of systems that never entirely stopped. The Director General's workspace was at the far end, separated from the main floor by a glass partition that was more symbolic than functional, open at both sides, connected to everything around it.

Adjacent to it, accessible through a maintenance door that required a level three access card, was the secondary equipment bay.

His access card was level four.

He entered the bay during the shift change on the second afternoon, when the overlap between departing and arriving personnel created a window of approximately eight minutes during which the corridor outside was reliably unobserved. The bay was narrow and warm, lined with equipment housings and cable management systems that had been accumulating for years in the particular organic way of spaces that were functional rather than designed. He moved to the far wall, behind a bank of cable housings that had not been touched recently enough to have left marks in the dust, and worked with the quiet efficiency of someone who had rehearsed this moment many times in a room in Zurich.

The first device was small. Smaller than most people imagined such things to be. It sat in the space behind the cable housings with the patient stillness of something that had been designed to wait and was entirely comfortable doing so.

He checked the timer once.

Then he left the bay, walked back through the corridor, returned his tray to the cafeteria counter, and went to bed at a reasonable hour.

The second device required considerably more preparation.

The access point to the collider tunnel was located in a separate building, three hundred metres from the main laboratory complex, its entrance marked by nothing more distinctive than a reinforced door and a keypad that accepted his level four credentials without hesitation. The tunnel beyond it was long and curved and dimly lit, the walls close on either side, the ceiling low enough that the scale of what he was walking through was only apparent in the abstract, in the knowledge of what ran through this space at speeds approaching the fundamental limit of the physical world.

He walked for twenty minutes before reaching the section he had identified from the facility schematics the Curator had provided. A maintenance alcove, recessed into the curved wall between two sections of the accelerator infrastructure, invisible from either direction along the tunnel unless you were standing directly in front of it.

He placed the second device with the same quiet efficiency as the first.

He checked the timer.

Then he walked back through the tunnel, replaced his equipment in his bag, and returned to the visiting researchers block for the last time.

He thought about his wife as he packed his suitcase. Not with the sharp and disabling grief of the early months, the kind that arrived without warning and made it impossible to perform the ordinary functions of existing in the world. With something quieter than that. A presence rather than an absence. The sense of her beside him in the way that things you have carried long enough eventually become part of how you move.

She had trusted the machines.

She had gone into that hospital believing that the equipment would do what it had been designed to do, that the systems would function, that the people monitoring them would be attending. She had trusted it the way everyone trusted it, without thinking about it, because that was what trust in systems meant. You did not think about it. You simply depended on it and assumed the dependence would be honoured.

It had not been honoured.

The machines had failed and the people had followed the machines and she had died in a room full of equipment that was telling everyone she was fine, and their child with her, and the world had called it a malfunction and filed the paperwork and moved on.

He closed the suitcase.

The following morning Dr. Aleksander Novak checked out of the visiting researchers block, citing a family matter requiring his return to Warsaw. The receptionist expressed polite regret. His badge was deactivated. His access revoked.

He was outside the perimeter fence by nine fifteen.

By the time Ceceil Barker's flight landed in Geneva, the assassin was already three hours away, sitting in the window seat of a train moving through the Swiss countryside, watching the mountains pass with the calm and empty attention of someone who had done what they came to do and required nothing further from the landscape except its distance.

He did not look back.

He thought about nothing at all.


The first thing Ceceil noticed about CERN was the silence of it.

Not literal silence. The facility hummed and moved with the particular purposeful energy of a place where serious work was always in progress. But beneath the surface noise there was something else, a quality of concentration so deep and so sustained that it had become atmospheric, the way certain libraries felt, as though thinking itself had accumulated in the walls over decades and was still present, still active, still doing something that resisted easy description.

Dev appeared beside him on the pavement outside the main entrance and looked at the low buildings spread across the landscape with the expression of someone trying to reconcile what he was seeing with what he had expected.

"It looks like a business park," Dev said.

"Most of the important parts are underground," Ceceil replied.

"That explains a great deal."

The security processing took forty minutes, which was thirty five minutes longer than any of them had wanted. Elara spent the time managing the Swiss federal liaison, the Home Secretary's office, and the CERN security director simultaneously with the focused efficiency of someone who had long since stopped finding bureaucracy surprising and now simply moved through it the way water moved through rock, steadily and without drama. Adrian stood near the entrance with his hands in his coat pockets, looking at the facility with the quiet and considered attention he brought to everything, saying very little.

When the badges came through and the barriers opened, Ceceil walked inside and felt the scale of the place settle over him immediately.

He had been thinking about the couplet on the flight. He had been thinking about it since the moment it appeared on the screens in London and had not stopped thinking about it since, turning it the way he turned every difficult line, listening for what the words were doing beneath what they said.

Cold circuits hum a fractured hymn.

As reason's edge is worn to dim.

He had decoded it as CERN, which he remained certain was correct. But the specific meaning of cold circuits had been nagging at him since Brussels, sitting at the edge of his thinking like a word on the tip of the tongue that refused to arrive. The computing grid interpretation he had dismissed because it repeated the logic of the Google attack, and this poem did not repeat itself. Every couplet reached for something new, something the previous lines had not touched.

Cold circuits.

Not systems that processed information. Systems that operated at temperatures below anything that occurred naturally on the surface of the earth. The superconducting magnets of the Large Hadron Collider functioned at minus two hundred and seventy one degrees Celsius, colder than outer space, sustained by cryogenic systems of extraordinary complexity and precision. They were, in every literal sense, cold circuits. And they hummed. The entire collider hummed with the energy of particles moving at velocities that made the word fast seem like a category error.

He stopped walking.

Dev looked at him.

"The couplet is not about the computing systems," Ceceil said quietly. "It never was."

"What is it about," Dev said.

Ceceil looked at the ground beneath his feet. At the ordinary Swiss earth that concealed, a hundred metres below, the largest and coldest and most precise machine humanity had ever constructed.

"It is about the collider itself," he said. "Cold circuits humming a fractured hymn. Reason's edge worn to dim." He looked at Dev. "They are not targeting what CERN computes. They are targeting what CERN is."

Dev was very still.

"A bomb," he said.

The word landed between them with the particular weight of something that, once said, could not be unsaid.

Ceceil nodded once.

Dev already had his phone out.

Elara answered on the first ring and listened without interrupting while Ceceil explained what he believed, and when he finished there was a silence on the line that lasted exactly as long as it took her to make a decision.

"I will contact the security director," she said. "We need to search the tunnel."

"The entire tunnel is twenty seven kilometres," Ceceil said.

"Then we had better start immediately," Elara replied, and ended the call.

Adrian appeared at Ceceil's shoulder. His expression was grave and focused, the expression of a man who had heard enough to understand the situation and was already thinking about what it required. He said nothing, which was, Ceceil had come to understand, Adrian's particular form of respect for moments that did not need commentary.

Above them the Swiss sky continued its grey and ordinary business.

Below them, in the curved dark of the collider tunnel and in the secondary equipment bay adjacent to the Director General's workspace, two devices sat in their places and waited with the patience of things that had been designed to wait and had no concept of urgency and no interest in acquiring one.

Nobody standing in that car park knew how little time remained.

But the poem did.

It always had.
