ARC TWO: "THE CHILDREN OF THE HILLS" Chapter 4: The Network

[EXCERPT FROM VERIDIAN CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT CASE FILE #VC-26-8517]

DATE OF INVESTIGATION: 04/25/2026

LOCATION: WILLOWDALE COUNTY JAIL

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVES: THORNE, K. / MCDONALD, M.

INTERROGATION TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT

SUSPECT: KELLER, DAVID (DOB: 1985/02/28)

LOCATION: WILLOWDALE COUNTY JAIL

INTERVIEWERS: DETECTIVE THORNE, K. / DETECTIVE MCDONALD, M.

DATE: 04/25/2026 - 09:30 HRS

THORNE: You said you’re cooperating. Start with who the Architect is.

KELLER: I’ve never seen their face – they communicate through encrypted messages, always using voice modifiers. But they know everything about the anchors – every stone circle, every healing spring, every sacred forest in the region. They say they’re trying to "restore balance" between humanity and the land.

MCDONALD: By kidnapping kids?

KELLER: They said the children were "volunteers" – that their connection to the natural world is stronger than adults’. They promised no harm would come to them. I never would have gone through with it if I’d known those shadows would follow them.

THORNE: What’s the end goal?

KELLER: They’re building a network – linking rural anchors like the Children’s Stones to urban sites in Veridian. The plan is to activate them all at once, creating a single energy field that will "integrate" people with the land. They call it the Great Harmony.

MCDONALD: Integrate how?

KELLER: I don’t know all the details – just that it would change things permanently. They showed me schematics – symbols we found at the stones linked to ones from Cross’s lab in the city. Alistair Cross was working on the urban side of the project before you stopped him.

THORNE: How many other sites are there?

KELLER: I have a list – seven total, not counting the city sites. Pinehaven Forest is next, then a healing spring in Silver Creek, a cave system in Black Mountain... they’re all being modified the same way I modified the stones. The Harmony Collective is helping them – cells in every county, people who believe in the Architect’s vision.

THORNE: Why did you agree to help?

KELLER: I used to work for Cross’s tech firm – we were studying natural energy sources, trying to find clean power solutions. The Architect reached out to me after the firm was raided. They said they could help me finish the work, make a real difference. I was so focused on the goal... I didn’t see what I was becoming.

CASE FILE UPDATE - 04/25/2026 - 06:15 HRS

All seven children recovered safely – no physical injuries, minor emotional distress. Counseling arranged through Veridian’s child services department.

David Keller in custody – cooperating fully, providing information on "The Architect" and their broader plans. Transfer to Veridian PD holding facility scheduled for 04/26.

Esteban Pablo and Elena Domingo working with us to document and preserve Willowdale's ancient traditions responsibly. A community council will be formed to monitor the Children’s Stones and ensure future interactions with the land are respectful.

Children's Stones stabilized – static readings returned to natural levels. Pablo reports the stones now emit a softer, protective hum that local elders say hasn’t been felt in generations.

Evidence discovered linking Keller to other rural communities with similar anchor points. Keller has provided a detailed list of sites targeted by the Architect.

Confirmed connection to Alistair Cross and the urban integration project. Forensics has matched modification symbols from the stones to those found at Cross’s lab.

Sheriff Joyce Castro is coordinating with neighboring counties to share information and set up early warning systems for sacred sites.

As we loaded our gear into the car to head back to Veridian, Mac pulled out the list Keller had given us, spreading it across the hood.

"Pinehaven Forest is only two hours from here," he said, tracing a finger over the map. "We could head straight there instead of going back to the city."

I looked out at the hills one more time – the sun was high now, and the Children’s Stones glowed softly in the distance. Mia and her friends were playing in the schoolyard below, their laughter carrying up to us on the breeze.

"We could," I said, "but we need to get this information to Lieutenant Sharma first. She needs to know how deep this goes – city and country working together, that’s not something we can handle alone."

Mac nodded, folding up the list and sliding it into his pocket. "You’re right. But the second we’re done in Veridian, we’re heading to Pinehaven. Those sites aren’t going to protect themselves."

As we pulled onto the highway, leaving Willowdale behind, I thought about what Keller had said – about people believing they’re doing good even when they’re hurting others. The Architect was counting on that, using people’s hopes and fears to build their network.

But we were building something too – connections between cities and towns, between law enforcement and communities, between people who wanted to protect what mattered.

"Whatever comes next," Mac said, glancing over at me, "we’ll be ready. Together."
