Author's Preface

His melodic voice invades her ears just as intense as the sweet aroma. Her attention shifts, absorbing his full form before her. He sat in one of the booth seats, patting the spot next to him like there are no other options. Her brow twitches, seeing perfectly good spots across from him. Ignoring his pressure, she did as she pleases and sat across from him. Even as she kept her distance, his beaming face didn't falter. Far from it, he leans back to show how relax he is. "My... I was a little worried that you wouldn't show up."
Funny...you don't look worried. She shot him a tense glare, pulling out the flashlight and placing it on the table. "Here Mr. Brennan. I... unfortunately dropped it on the way home... I can pay for the damages-"
" Leas. Remember?" The wince on his features suggests that he didn't like the name she chose. This happened in their earlier phone call which brings more questions in her mind. However, he recovers soon after. He shows no interest in taking the flashlight back, his attention is on her every move than the damn thing. "You're way more polite than the rumors say."
Rumors. Every muscle in her tenses, thinking about how the town views her always made her agitated. The rumors began when she accidentally spooks her employer at her first ever job interview. Now that she recalls, the man gave up his wallet and ran away. Her mother used to say how Idonea can easily scare off a bear, even with the expression on her face. Of course, she works gigs long enough to have some people approach her for more than run. Not many pursue her company though. Fewer even refer to her by her first name out of fear. "So, you've known about me?"
The waitress finally came around to take their order. She’s an older plump woman with a burnt-out expression on her face while her black hair tied up in a bun. Her red-painted lips strain to move as she spoke, "May I take your order?"
The interruption irks the wolf, about to tell the lady to scram. However, the male she sat across from flash this smile so bright it lit up the room. "Let's start with some coffee and your delicious scones and farls for the both of us. "
His brilliant smile adds a bit more life to the waitress's eyes, a blush forms on her face as she writes down the order. "Sure. And would you like me to have them cook your usual, lad?"
"Yes, but please give my lady friend some time to order first" His gaze rest on Nea now, seems like he is expecting something from her besides some menial food order. Looking deep into her own eyes, it looks like he is inspecting every aspect of her soul.
"Um...A scone is fine..." Nea shifts underneath his rather intense gaze, suddenly shy. There aren’t many people who can hold her gaze without faltering and he unnerves her.
"Nonsense. I'm paying after all. We'll let you know when she is ready to order." The waitress takes this cue with a slow nod and moves back towards the kitchen.
His permanent smile evolves into a wily one, one that she didn't think he will openly display. He looks just like a child with a new toy. "My~! Never thought you'd be the shy type."
… Shy? SHY!!! Would a shy person lead the wine tax riot in Bordeaux in 1528? Hearing that word to describe her felt insulting, especially living as long as she did. A small growl escapes her throat in response to his teasing. But his beauty and tantalizing scent dulls the sharp end of her irritation. Even as she calls him out for his teasing, it lacks the anger that she feels. "Of course… If all your knowledge comes from rumors... you won’t realize the complicated intricateness in my personality. That… and maybe I find you uncomfortable to be around with."
The last part is meant to hurt his feelings, which isn’t the case at all. It weirds her out that he had known she exists all this time and she never found him. How can a human with this sweet smell hide from me so well?
Leas perks up while a wrinkle on his freckled nose form. So playful that if he had a tail, he will be wagging it. "Mmm. You're not wrong. It's because of the rumors that I kept my distance."
The coffee and pastries are served, ending this second wave of conversation in awkward silence. The flashlight is now on the far side of this table. The waitress scowls at Nea, she didn’t need to have a good nose to tell that the waitress is losing her patience.
"Right. I'll have a full breakfast." A full breakfast in Northern Ireland includes pan fried eggs, sausages, pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash browns, baked beans, and more soda bread. A meal meant to feed a hardworking farmer, but in her case, this is a normal entree for her. As a werewolf, she had a very high metabolism and constantly needs sustenance. This is the most expensive side of her biology, hence the reason she even bothers keeping a job in the first place. The waitress curls a thin brow, then shrugs, not staying around to ask questions.
Leas chuckles, "A woman after my own heart."
Her head tilts at the comment, then she grabs a scone for herself to chew one end of it. Every muscle in her tense to keep herself from blushing, don't let him see that his advances are working. He didn't comment on her obvious discomfort, continuing what they left off as he picks at the farls. "You are a very interesting woman, Idonea. Despite how society paints you, you still try to do your part. My jaw nearly fell when I saw you help an elderly person with her groceries. You even walk dogs, if people have enough trust to have you handle their pets, that means you aren't some ex-terrorists or some grunt from the mafia. I told myself to reach out to you when I returned from my trip."
"Hmm... A bit stalkerish of you." Nea grumbles between each chew of the scone. Her hatred born from the lack of her own attentiveness. A human who manages to slip by her radar for so long is an embarrassment to all werewolf-kind. She starts to blame it on the growing pollution that is clouding her senses.
He chokes on his half-chewed farls, the laugh that nearly escapes him trying to kill him in the process. He recovers after a few minutes, tears welling up at the corners of his purple eyes. "Ahah. Yeah, I am... better at being approached than approach someone, so my actions are strange. If I have disturbed you, then I am terribly sorry. That wasn't my intention."
His concerns for her comfort are receiving even though it is a bit too late now for it. He had done everything to have her attend breakfast with him. A human that can convince her to do exactly the opposite of what she planned to do is scary. But more than fearful, her attraction to him became stronger. She is beginning to imagine how his lips will feel against her-
Stop that Nea! Her heart stops at her raunchy thoughts. She may have had a slight crush on the mystery radio host for what he is, which is a talented individual. But it didn’t warrant her to imagine such things now that she can pin a beautiful face to the name Leasdich Brennan. It's not healthy. Besides, she can smell some of his intentions. It started with excitement, then joy, but she can smell the small sadness hidden in that cheery disposition that he had hidden. This man had just as many layers as she and for the first time in a long time she wants to chase it down.
"I... forgive you." She finishes the sweet-tasting scone, going after her serving of farls. Her hunger bests her, now glad that he is willing to pay her the trouble of his actions. She will never expect her forgiveness is ever heavily sought after by anyone.
"I am glad that I haven't ruined our relationship! Genuine ones are hard to come by for me...and you're very special." He already beams harder, blinding her with that spectacular radiance.
When he said that, she blushes hard and kept her gaze away. It is too much radiance to take all at once.
But why did he say that? He had a face that attracts everyone, a personality that is sweet like juice. He had enough money and fame to win anyone if he so chose to let people know. Who could ever wrong him?
It might be hard for him to find friends that care for him outside of his looks, fame, or money. Her heart sank, feeling guilty that she had openly ordered an expensive meal just because he is paying. That she gets to meet the man she listens to over the radio for years and recently allowing her imagination to defile his image. It is selfish of her. She drank the coffee while stuffing her face. Once her mouth is free from food, she responds. "I'll pay for myself...Leas. I'd hate to use you for my gluttony."
"Hmm." He didn't drink his coffee, finishing his scones without washing anything down, which she finds strange. Why order coffee if you aren't going to drink it? He shakes his beautiful head, "Not happening. But if you feel so guilty-"
He finally grabs the flashlight, just to point one end at her. His posture is innocent and playful, but something emerges in his aroma that did not match his exterior. This scent is new to this individual, but she smells something similar when walking into a masquerade ball during the Renaissance age. The smell of sex and lust suffocated her then and she accidentally barge into an orgy party of a bunch of Christian officials in her stupor. A memory she had tried so many times to shove it into some mental box and burn it, only for it to surface back up.
Nea can smell a semblance of that off him and this time she relishes it, making her skin shiver in anticipation despite the implications that surfaces in her brain. Leas is looking at her; purple eyes focus on a certain spot on her face. Was he...
She didn't need to answer. Because he answers her, "You can always make it up to me...by going out with me."
Huh...
