The Weatherkeeper's Job

The weather is power, and it is ours to command. — Veldrum Atmospheric Corps Caline Estago knows weather. She has trained all her life to measure it, predict it, and, when necessary, bend it to her will. A temporary posting in the provincial town of Sunglade should be simple work for someone like her. Go in, straighten out the local weather, and be back before Commander Blackwall can say, “I hope she never returns.” Her assignment turns out to be considerably less straightforward. In Sunglade, rain moves where the wind says it shouldn’t. Water gathers around ancient trees for no sensible reason. Old roads seem to matter long after they have vanished. And one particularly persistent patch of weather has taken an interest in Caline herself. The deeper she looks, the older the questions become. There are paths no longer marked on maps, patterns her instruments cannot account for, and traces of a world that seems to have left more behind than anyone remembers. Caline came to Sunglade expecting to correct the weather. Instead, she may have to learn why it keeps trying to go home.
