Unlicensed Miracles

The age of gods is over. Once they ruled over man, but now they're recognised for what they are. Simple constructs powered by belief, not even sentient outside what is believed of them. Under the Priests Union, this knowledge has ushered the city of Eccless to an age of progress, gods of invention producing electricity, gods of plenty producing food, and little idols to gods of protection watching every house for a small fee in sacrificial materials and a daily prayer. Whatever the ancient peoples of the world might have believed, they weren't magic, they're a science now, following definite and well understood rules and limits which allow them to be used as tools. So when Professor Rudolph Raspe claims to have invented a box that rewrites physics, which has no limitations, which will obsolete divine power? Which appears to defy every understood law reality runs on? Nobody believes a word of it. Everybody assumes it's a fraud, a fake, that he's using divine power or more mundane methods to achieve his results. Everybody except his beleaguered apprentice, Alex De La Ruge, his one true believer. After all, if he really had omnipotence at his fingertips, surely he'd've avoided turning up dead. Industrial fantasy and new weird murder mystery. Female protagonist, no romance, variable chapter length at 3k word minimum. AI used for SPAG checking only. Updates Monday/Friday. Apologies to my cover artist (u/Myseljo on reddit) for kind of butchering the art whilst inserting the title text. My bad for not having settled on a title when I gave the commission, I should've realised that'd be an issue.
