Aspen has been living in a treehouse she cannot remember building. She is searching for the fairies that keep erasing her memory. To keep herself intact, she has built a system: red pen for facts, green for wants, and blue for answers. The world keeps putting blue where questions end: clear sky, deep water. So when blue mold appears around a gap in her floor, Aspen knows where to look for an answer. Her Mother’s hand reaches through. Her Mother always kept her nails red, but the floor had no right to know where the polish chipped. The next time Aspen wakes, she finds a village living inside a massive dying tree—and herself living inside a dead girl, complete with twitching moth-wings and thin, scarred hands. The girl's name was Lyra. Lyra had been looking for answers too, already fluent in patterns of color Aspen had barely begun to understand. On the last night of her life, Lyra asked the colors for more than Aspen ever had. She opened a gap in the god-tree’s wood—gray, with something red inside—and she let it stay. That gap grows a little wider every day, and it carries gray remnants of Aspen's old world. She finds colorless tufts of her brother's hair poking through the wood by the second day. She has seven days. Seven to seal the hole between both worlds. Seven to figure out whether she even wants to. Seven before the tear stops bringing her pieces of home and starts bringing all of what only sent a hand the first time.
